Tige.. the 343 actually pulls harder out of the hole
but loses to the 409 during Mid range and top end power.
Since 90% of what we will be doing is surfing, 10% Wakeboarding I think the 343 will be ok. I can always do a different prop.
I haven't had the 409 til this RZ4, but when we first surfed with it, we noticed the power right away. Our 24Ve has the MP340 with the 1235. The RZ4 is stock, so assume the 537. The RZ4 shocked us when we hit it out of the hole, it felt like a lot more power than we had been used to. The RZ2 we had had the 343 and the first Z3 had a 343. At the same time, I think the 343 is fantastic, and sufficient power, but sitting in the boat pulling someone up, the 409 felt noticeably more powerful.

I am also pricing and putting together my color scheme and options for a Z3. I was advised to go with the 409, because of the extra weight of the boat and the extra ballast we will be running. I was told we would see better performance, to include GPH. This would be a bump up from the 343 we are running in our '10 22Ve. We probably do 60% surf, and 40% everything else behind the boat.

Also the 409 comes standard with a closed cooling system. This is a plus for us living around salt and brackish water. I never plan to put the boat in these waters, but I would have that option if needed.

I call BS on the whole theory that bigger engines are going to burn less or equal fuel. That idea seems to usually be touted by sales people who make money selling more expensive boats.
          Be excellent to one another.

You don't have to look far for proof. All smaller displacement engines in cars get better fuel economy city and highway. The same holds true in trucks. The larger displacement engine only has one advantage.More towing capacity.

I wish it was warmer to test. But we spent a few outings on the 409 RZ4, and it seemed to use the SAME gas as I was using with the 24Ve, less than 4GPH. I wouldn't say the 409 was less, but I can tell you it doesn't work as hard. If I have a chance to do a real test with it, and measure I will.

Maybe better GPH was a poor choice of words on my part. But if the 343 is at higher RPMs than the 409 at the same speed then it would seem to me there is an advantage to the 409 with engine wear and GPH. Is it a $5k advantage? That is up to the buyer to decide.

Here is my vote for color choices. I did the first flex package for the Broncos fans. The other color would be my choice with the standard package.

2009 RZ2, PCM 343, MLA Surf Ballast, Premium Sound.

I like your second choice EWOK.I'm kind of partial to the blue/white theme though.

I kind of want to go with the 409. That motor wraps out at almost 6k rpm too! You will definitely notice 66 horsepower (and who knows what the torque difference is), especially up here at altitude. Will it be more efficient? No idea, it's possible. It will definitely use more fuel at higher speeds and rpm's.

I already know for me, it will come down to either the 409 or Metallic Pearl on75% of the boat. Dunno, just saying I have 409 horsies is pretty bad arse!

Is more motor ever a bad thing!
Its a boat, its gunna guzzle gas regardless of the motor, in that big of a boat with lots of weight it may be better to have the 409 than the 343. The 343 is almost too much in the little rzr but our boat uses much less gas than any other watersports boat ice been on. It is a little over powered but considering all we do is wakeboard and surf the motor has spent most of its life pushing 5500-6500 lbs around. In a z3 you're looking at 4600lb dry weight plus 2300lb ballast plus your whole crew that's an easy 7500-8500lbs or more...the 343 will be enough but it won't give you the same holeshot by anymeans....

My buddy has the MCX in his x25, a4200lb boat, with any ballast over stock its takes in excess of 30 seconds to plane off... Just something to consider.

If he's going black and white, he should just buy my RZ2!
