Well, Wake the World Lake Mead is in the books! Stuart and Kristina from Boulder Boats hosted an AWESOME event. Wake the World Lake Mead hosted about 40 kids from St. Jude’s Ranch for children in Boulder City. This was particularly special for me since Wake the World Texas has taken kids from St. Jude’s Ranch in Bulverde the last two years. They started out Thursday by taking a boat out to St. Jude’s Ranch to show the kids what to expect and talk a little about boating safety. Greg Hodgin from Wake the World North Carolina arrived at the Ranch Thursday evening to help out and support the event. I arrived Friday afternoon and was anxious to head straight to St Jude’s to meet the kids along with Stuart and Kristina. After hanging out and meeting some of the kids,we enjoyed a nice dinner at Milo’s with Stuart and Kristina.
Saturday morning was very exciting. Greg and I went to pick up a couple boats to head down to Lake Mead. When we got there all the other boat owners started to arrive. This is always one of my favorite times. It’s really cool to see other boat owners excited about giving this special memory to some kids they don’t even know. After all the boats were launched, The kids got separated into groups, introduced to the boat owners and off they went. Boulder boats was nice to let Greg and I use a Master Craft X Star so we could enjoy the day with the kids. In the morning we were able to go around and meet up with the different boats and see all the smiling faces. The kids were having an absolute blast! Lake Mead Yacht Club provided a 40’ Pontoon boat that served as a “home base” that floated out in the lake. Around lunch all the boats tied up with the pontoon boat and enjoyed pizza for lunch. After lunch CWB Pro Wakeboarder Jimmy Trask put on a show for the kids which they really thought was cool. Jimmy and CWB Pro Wakeboarder Will Christien were there for the entire day to to help teach the kids how to wakeboard.
After the show the kids hit the lake again. In the afternoon Greg and I got to take out a few girls from the ranch. They enjoyed a little tubing, then some wake boarding and finished off with a little kneeboarding. They all did great and had a blast!
Late afternoon, everybody started packing up to head back to St. Jude’s where dinner would be served. Stuart and Kristina put on a great party for the kids. They enjoyed dinner from Chipotle and Chili’s all while enjoying music and watching a slide show from the day. After dinner, the evening was capped off by a raffle where the kids got to win some great prizes!
At any Wake the World event I have been a part of it is amazing to see how this day effects these kids. We get the privilege to give these kids a memory they otherwise would not have had a chance to have. The laughter, smiles and gratitude from the kids blow me away. Lake Mead was no different. There were even a few kids I wanted to stuff in my suitcase and bring home with me.
Thank you to everyone involved in this event for making it so special for these kids and for me. I can’t wait for Wake the World Lake Mead 2012.
