Wineterizing 2004 22V Riders Addition

Tryin to winterize for my first time haveing a few problems. I have removed the 5 plugs (3) on Starboard and (2) on port side. Not sure how to run antifreeze through. I see where the hose goes to the impeller and impeller up into something and then out od that something into the engine. Do I need to run the boat to run antifreeze through it? Can I just undo the hose that runs to the engine and dump antifreeze in. If I run the boat the impeller will be running dry.

On the oil change I found the hose which I am told drains that oil. The person I spoke to has a Master craft direct drive and says he has a spot he puts the oil hose through to drain. I do not have this and dont see how I can get the oil to drain and have room to put a pan down to catch it. Am I looking at the right thing? PLease help if you can.....about to give up.

Where do you live? If the water is drained completely, antifreeze is not always needed.

The easiest way to drain the oil out is to suck it out with a pump.

Boat is stored in Wisconsin so I worry about not using antifreeze. Where do you pump th oil from? Sorry for being a bit ignorant havent had much/any experience with inboards. Dont really have a good dealer in my area.

Yeah, id probably use it, i hear is gets chili up that way. The most effective way to administer anti-freeze is to remove the thermostat housing and fill the block up.

Most oil suckers pull through the dipstick tube.

Thanks again for the help....hopefully I can find the thermostat housing you speak of. It looks like I have a hose into the impeller, a hose out impeller into the "something" which is probably the therm housing, then a hose out of the "something" into the engine. If I disconect the hose coming out of the "something" (hoping its the therm housing you speak of)and pour antifreeze into that will that work. Do I need to have the engine running or just pour the antifreeze in? Is there any reason I would need to run the engine?

x1000 on the oil extractor. Search on "oil extractor", specifically the Mityvac 7400. Available online from dozens of sources. Best $70 you'll ever spend. I did my first oil change the recommended way, by trying to drain the oil through the hull plug. It took hours and I didn't get all of the oil out. Then, at the recommendation of user "kko" here, I got the Mityvac 7400. Next oil change took about three minutes and I got everything until it was sucking air. It was awesome. Spend the money.

You should drain the oil using the hose that comes off the engine's oil pan. Don't suck it out of the dipstick, because it's so narrow it will slow things down again. You also probably won't get as much oil out because you cannot be sure if the tube you shove down the dipstick hole is reaching the deepest part of the oil pan. The hose that comes off the bottom of the oil pan is already at the bottom of the pan.

To use the oil pan hose, wait for the oil extractor to arrive and then take its largest hose and the cap off the engine's hose to the hardware store. Find the fittings necessary to make an adapter from the extractor's hose to the engine's hose. Then you'll have a liquid-tight way to draw the oil straight out of the oil pan. No mess, no fuss, no leaks, no problem.

Oil filter: After slightly loosening the old oil filter, put a gallon size ziplok bag around it while taking it off. This will catch any spillage and keep your boat clean. Do the same when you install the new filter, after filling the filter with new oil. Prefilling the new filter keeps the engine's oil pump from first seeing no resistance as it fills the filter, and then suddenly seeing gobs of backpressure when the filter fills up. This is an old diesel engine trick but it applies to your marine engine too.

WRT antifreeze: I live in an area where it hard freezes every winter. I don't use antifreeze, but I do make certain the water is drained from everywhere. Do what makes you feel safest. Don't forget the heater core if your boat has a heater.

I thought you ran the boat until the stat opens and then change from the water to antifreeze and let the impeller suck up the antifreeze until you see it come out the exhaust. Then I drain about 30% from the drain plugs but not all of it. What about the transmission and water separator if you have one?

I know they make a stand that looks like a toilet plunger that a hose can attach to for under the boat but make sure if the ground gets wet it does not fall while the boat is running, have someone watch it.

Just my 2-cents!!! I am not a boat mechanic by any means.

or take the oil drain hose that comes off the oil pan and stick it through the bilge plug to drain or suck it with extractor

This is what I do. Open up the thermostat.
