The other day we were puting the boat away and unhooking it from the hitch. As is common from time to time the tounge of the boat was a little difficult to get of the ball. Jumped on the bumper to shake the hitch loose. The tounge of the trailer came off but there was a snap we never heard before. Well upon further looking around the bolt that is on the swiwng portion of the trailer snapped right were the threads stop and the nut nd section were found on the ground. This bolt had a crack in it for some time since it was rusted through the crack and there was only a small portion of clean metal where it broke (about 1/8 inch). This is a grade 5 bolt from the markings and should have over 100,000lbs tensile strength. Please make sure if you have a swing hitch to check this bolt and make sure you do not have this issue. The nut is probably rusted solid to the bolt. Lucky for us this happened when we were putting the boat away.

The new bolt should be slightly longer, or at least have the threads that extend a little further beyond the top of the hinge. I think the stress being on the threaded portion of the bolt contributes to early failure.
It happened on mine...i think I had a thread, but cannot find it with a quick search right now.Be excellent to one another.

Got a grade 8 bolt that is 7 inches long and is 5/8. Found it in a small local hardware store. The broken one I gave to our root cause group that will perform a complete analysis on it as to cause of failure, determine alloy, hardness, country of origin etc. Hope to have results in a few days.
