Sick of running out of gas on lake

I have a 2005 24v with the GM Vortec engine. When I bought the boat a few years ago the fuel gauge was dead so I installed a Faria Fuel Flow Manager with the inline sensor. This worked well for the first year or so and then it stopped working. The instructions say it is best to mount the sensor in the vertical position, I was unable to do so at the time and had to mount horizontal. The instructions also say to mount AFTER the main fuel filter, any idea where that is on my boat?? I want to install another new sensor in the vertical position but I need to make sure it is after the main fuel filter per the install manual.

After my first sensor died a added a filter to the fuel line and installed a second sensor (late last year). Last weekend we ran out of fuel with the fuel manager still reading 15 gallons left.


Suggestions? Sick of wife giving me "that look" when we run out of fuel.

I have run out of gas two or three times and I decided its not worth even replacing any more. No matter how many times I try to fix it it always has happened that I find out it doesn't work again when I run out of gas again. So now I just watch the hours. I can normally go about 10 hours before filling up again. Thats a mix of riding, driving to places, and putting around. Its not exact but it gives me a ruff estimate. Or you could get in a even better habit and fill it up sooner than that.

How about 5 gallon cans.Put 5 gallons in after you come back in.OR you could put 10 gallons every 2nd time out.

Is it a Marine power engine?
If so, I was able to mount mine in the vertical position just under the engine by the mount. (1” before the fuel pump)
On my boat, you need to mount the sensor between the tank and the fuel pump ( my system is a single sensor style. There are systems that have two sensors to be used with a return line) Also you might need to calibrate you sensor .

Have you considered replacing the fuel level sender and having the gauge functioning again?

I gave up and just keep the tank full..filling it when it hits half a tank. Ran out twice this summer ..sucked getting towed

I fill up before going out each time, but I installed a Faria fuel flow meter in the vertical position as instructed on my last boat and it worked great for 3 years before I sold it. It told me exactly how much I used and that is how much it took to fill it each time, +\- 1 gal. I'm on my iPhone now but you should be able to search for threads on how to change the fuel filter, and that should tell you where in the line to place the sensor. Use a longer fuel line if you need it to mount the sensor vertically. I'll be adding a FF meter to my current boat eventually, but I don't keep it in the water like my last boat so I just fill up every time on the way to the lake.

This is the link to an old post about my fuel flow meter install on my '04 22V- it whould be the same for your '05. I mounted it in the vertical and for $30 put a filter in upstream.
