I don't think its just cosmetic, my guess is the boat would lean over with less weight also. They are designed to provide lift. Think of it like the convex V hull. No hook in back of the hull, boat sinks down making taps what it is. Without the Chine, the boat may weight easier, since it doesn't have to combat the lift from any chines. That is my reasoning for trying it. The rub rail effects the wave more than just cosmetic, the chine is more just cosmetic, but not if it is also producing lift at 12mph. I really don't know if it is or not.http://wake9.com/

its amazing that that tiny lip can make much difference in a wave.
somehting ive noticed behind our RZR is that right were the chine is the boat creates a very large HOLE in the water roughly 8 inches deep and 12 inches long. i did not ever notice behind our old malibu when surfing nor do i on my friends x-25 which we put more than 2500# in on one side to surf

Man I want to cut mine out! Gosh not planning= a bigger fatter wave!! I wonder if you just took the chine back to about the same spot that the other one ends. So don't take it out completely just the last foot or so. Perhaps a hybrid: Remove only the rear foot or so of the chines. This would let most of the hull's length benefit from the lift the chines generate but would eliminate any water disturbance caused by the sharp corners at the transom.
BTW, those chines are not just "bumps" of increased thickness on the bottom of an otherwise smooth hull. They are molded in, visible from the inside surface of the hull too. If you cut them flush to the hull's surface, you'll have slots in your hull and seriously compromise its strength and integrity. I've done some pretty serious mods to my boat but this won't be one of them!
Also, Duffy, regarding your comment about your cut-down swim platform: That may be why I haven't seen any effect from these chines on the wave quality. I have the factory standard 2009 swim platform with the rounded corners so that may be hiding the effect. I should be going out again today and I will specifically look for it.

I think those are there for a reason and that is to provide lift while planing. As a comparison, my friend has an Epic 23v with the 496 and the OJ 14x14.25 prop on it and they weigh in the 3,300lb range. My RZ2 has the 340hp Marine Power and the stock 537 prop on it. We drag race the boats for fun every now and then and if we start at the same exact time, he can only take me for about the first 50' or so and then my boat just pulls away like it's no big deal even though he has 1,000 lbs less weight, more horsepower, more torque and a prop that should give him a ridiculous holeshot. The Tige hull planes faster and is more efficient and I think it's because of those "chines" as you guys are calling them. At some point I will swap to the Acme 1235 and then I don't think his boat will even get a holeshot on me.

Here's a repost of a photo of our port wave:
Look at the bottom of the photo, just to the right of the wave lip. See that string of subsurface bubbles that is sort of parallel to the lip? That's coming off the chine. It passes under the swim platform and doesn't surface before it reaches the other side of the wave, so it doesn't have any impact on the waveface at all. It's also so close to the swim platform that I doubt most surfers would ever get the board anywhere close to it. Even if they did, there's so little air content that I don't think it would alter the board's behavior.
On our 24Ve at least, I don't think the chines are degrading the wave quality. I'm not sure if that's due to how our ballast system works, or because we have the larger unmodified factory swim platform, or ???

Centurion, Malibu, MB's all waves look smoother. It's hard to really explain. I think the chines just cause disturbance. I can see the chine while I surf and I can totally see it causing disturbance in the face of the wave. Here is a picture of my Centurion avalanche wave for reference.
