Board racks are the only way to go for storage! I made some last year outa 1" pvc and some fittings. Plus made a similar rack for hanging and drying life jackets.
The "base plate" was a repurposing of some other junk I had lying around but it's basically two L's with a cross brace between them and then braces on each L near the bottom (making a triangle). Like this:
The only thing I would have done different on the life jacket one is leave a little more space between them. You could add legs to it really easy.
The board rack I mounted a little close to the ceiling for surf boards now that I have my actual board up there. Im going to have to lower it about 4inches or so. With the boards angled I can still part the truck next to it.
Yep, that's exactly what we built for our boathouse. In fact, my WIFE built it. We used one inch dowels covered in pipe insulation. You'd swear we worked from the same plans.

Ha, I don't think we've got but one of those boards still in the quiver either. (the black and white state is the only one we're still riding). I sold most of that collection on the wall to a TO doctor with a house on the lake at almanor.

Shawndog,
On your racks, how did you get the angle just right? I ended up building sort of a jig to guide my hole saw and then made it identical to yours. But if I wasn't careful, then I found that the dowels would be just a little off angle from one another, which really was only a cosmetic issue, but is still a little bit hard on my OCD side.

Lol step 1 stop being OCD? If you saw mine up close its far far far from perfect. old lumber scraps and the base piece was a homemade garage bike rack. She ain't fer show.
Step 2 -- I "cheated" on getting the angles right by using PVC. The bars are 1" PVC and they go into 45* PVC elbows. I hole sawed holes that are the same size as the o.d. of the elbows, then ran a long drywall screw sideways through the 2x4 and elbow to lock them in. So the angle is in the elbow, if that makes sense? I drilled the hole saw holes straight in.
My setup is a total hack job for sure but it has been going strong for 3+ years.
