DIY Board Racks - $35, 1.5 hours, and 4 beers

I am probably like most of you, and you hate having your garage cluttered. So with the latest obsession of wake surfing new boards have made their way into the garage. I had just been laying them anywhere I could along with the wakeboard. So this weekend I figured I could organize things a bit.

The materials are 2 1x4s, 4 8ft dowels, 12 washers and 5 inch threaded bolts. Here is somewhat of the walk through from beginning to finish.

    The materials:

The spot where they are going:

    The 1x4s drilled:

Both racks with the dowels on them:

    The finished product:

I now have a place to put our snowboards now. So these racks will serve a dual purpose.

Nice work. You gotta love having a place to put the awkward stuff.

I don't park my truck in the garage because it's TIGHT TIGHT fit because of my work bench. Plus, I am always swapping our dirt bikes, my street bikes, and my drum gear. I just didn't have a really good place to put things after taking them out of the boat. So this is what I came up with, and I thought I would share. Maybe inspire someone else to try and unclutter their garage.

What did you use to cover the dowels with?

Looks great, and a pretty easy looking job.
        Be excellent to one another.

          What is the spacing?

@talltigeguy - I used pipe insulation (home depot link). Cost me roughly $1 a piece, and I bought 4 of them.

            @TeamAllen - Spacing is 1 foot.

Looks Good! What's the second board on the rack - looks black?

That board is a Grindwater Mauka. I need a fat boy board. HA! I weight 225-230, and I was afraid that the Shaka board, which is rated up to 230 wasn't going to cut. So I went with the Mauka which is rated to handle up to 300#. The two boards are similar, it's just that it's 4 inches shorter. After riding the Mauka I believe I could actually get away with the Shaka. I spent a good month researching boards after getting my IS stolen out of my boat.

                    Question:
Did you glue the dowel's into the holes?

I assume the 5 inch threaded bolts and washers were to attach 1x4s to the wall--or--was they used to somehow attach the bottom of the dowels to the 1x4s?

                    Looks great.

(explains why the last 3 dowels are all crooked.. bahaha)
So this monkey walks into a bar...

And when they are in the garage, no young hoodlem will steal them out of your boat!
I'm on a boat man. I got my flippy floppies....

I desperately need to do this to. I just moved into a new house with a 3 car garage, but I can't decide how I want to set up the garage yet. Plus I've been having way too much fun skiing on my time off.

No, I used deck screws to screw the boards to the wall.

My buddy has a drill press. So we drilled down the center of the dowels 3 inches down with a one size bigger drill bit. The part of the board facing the wall was pre drilled, and recessed about 1/4 of an inch. placed a washer in the hole, put the screw right through it and the board, and screwed on the dowel.... Hope I explained that right. HAHAHA!

How would you modify this for a boat Shed where I can't drill into the walls? How would you suggest modifying it to make it stable on the floor?
