    New fuel tank advise.

I'm putting in a new fuel tank for several reasons. I was just wondering if anybody had a resource they would like to share.

This tank fits perfect and price is right. However I have no experience with the supplier or the manufacturer. Anyone? Anyone?

Moeller makes a very nice poly tank. I have one for blackwater on the houseboat and it is a high quality roto-molded product. Good price on that one, so I'd buy it.

New tank ordered! $210 out there door. Woohoo! We have West Marine store here and they will price match any advertised price. Went down there, showed them the lowest price I could find online ($196) and they said OK. I immediately started pulling up prices for all the rest of the crap I needed to go with it. They matched every one of em. No shipping charges since they just order it up from their warehouse. Everything will be in on Thursday.

The reason behind all this is the new ballast system. With the added weight and no more opposite side weight, I was really concerned about the amount of list I'm going to gain and the stock tank configuration. I contacted the tank manufacturer to find out about the pick up in that particular tank. It was the last year they put a straight pick up in them. After that the went to a sump set up. The pick up for my tank is located in the aft starboard corner. When surfing the port side, the pick up is on the high side of the tank. The tank itself is 80x19x6. Really wide not that deep and really shallow. I'm really surprised that I haven't run it dry more than once. The new tank is 32x17.5x14 with the pick up dead center and all the way aft. Perfect. It will set centered in the rear locker and will eliminate all kinds of crap at the filler neck, pick up and sender. The space gained will allow for another 100lbs per side. This will allow me to go to a simple two bag set up, eliminating tons of plumbing required for a four bag set up, eliminate, my fuel pick up issues, and give me more ballast that is more effective given that it will be all the way in the back corner as opposed to sitting on top of the tank. Win, win, win. It will (should) also give me a more accurate fuel gauge since it will be dead center of the tank as opposed to on the end. Another win. It is also going to be less expensive than the four bag set up. Easier to do. Win. No swiss cheasing of the seat bases to mount the pumps. Win. I'm going Charlie Scheen on this biatch. Winning!

Just a couple of drawings of the new plan w/ the new tank and the old plan with the old tank. The old tank is not shown in the second drawing but, it would run the entire length of the rear compartment, under the upper sacs. The old plan also only shows one side. All of those lines would repeate on the other side. Yikes. The new plan roughly the same capacity and just slightly less complicated. I can still add the lower sacs for another 150lbs or so but, I'm gonna see how this works out first.

Sounds like a great plan Nicky! I did'nt do the math, but are you loosing any fuel capacity with the new tank?

I'm losing 3 gal. BFD. It's a much more effective tank. I usually burn right around 15 gal p/day.

I guess I should have checked out the link before I asked.
So you are eliminating the whole storage from the rear locker? This is an interesting idea. Keep documenting your progress. I like the idea!

Ya, pretty much. The only thing I keep back there is the overboard ballast pump, the ropes and the old sac so, all I really need is rope storage in order to maintain the same functionality. I'm gonna build a couple of partitions on either side of the tank that will be the full height of the compartment. This will give me a 32x14x5 (or so) space on top of the tank for the ropes to store.

How's the progress and what are you doing with your old sac that fit in the rear locker?

I'm getting there. I have everything, I'm just starting at the front and moving back. Got the switches and wiring done last night. I'm hoping to get the pumps and the inlet done tonight. New tank set up over the weekend. It requires facing up the new floor section, deviders and blower vent. I've been getting slammed at work and haven'd gotten much time to work on it.
