Boat won't start. Don't know why.

First ride of round 2. Wife surfing, me driving, no more than 10 gal. into our full fuel load. We had had been surfing port side all day, which I feel is important only because, in my old D-Drive, the fuel tank is straight across the entire width of the stern. The pick up is located at the starboard aft corner of the tank. With 600 in the trunk, 200 on the floor in front of the tank, 500 in VAB in the corner, 200 in VAB in the observer slot, the wake was as nice as it ever had been. ...sputter sputter duhhhhhn.

"Sorry Baby, you gotta swim back."

    "Why?"

"Boat won't start. Don't know why."

Some nice folks (local slalom gods) in their Nautique pulled out of their kiddie tube session to come and check on us. I thanked her and just requested that she go ahead and let the kids ride and once they were done and if we were still floating around, maybe could they come and check on us. In the mean time, I'll get to work. She rode the kids over to the beach and sent the fellas over to lend a tow. Super good guys. Rolled up with a proper rope ready to go. I barely had time to drain the ballast before they got there. It was a short ride over to the ramp so I almost reluctantly accepted his offer with a sigh and a, "Ya, I need a tow." As I tied up the line I had to ask, "How come you guys aren't over in the course?"

"Just being lazy. You're givin us something to do."

"Glad to be of service," I replied.

With the tow line holding steady, I decided to grab a cold one and enjoy the ride. Went for the cooler, stepped on my glasses, which I had taken off so that I wouldn't drop them in the lake while hooking up the tow line! Grrr! Tried to bend them back and TINK!, lens cracks. Straight to the trash, open cooler, grab beer. Sit my *** on the platform, drag my feet in the cool water and start sippin. Meanwhile, my crew is gigglin their happy asses off at Captain Grumpy. I had to laugh. As bad as that situation could be, it couldn't be any better. Well, minus the glasses. Them things were done anyways and I just picked up a nice new pair of RayBans today so that part worked out good already.

Anyways, Joe Slalom pulls us in for a perfect drop off right up to the dock. I pull the quick release on my knot, float by just close enough for me to hand them the line and throw a $20 in their boat.

"You didn't have to do that," he said.

    "Neither did you. Thank you."

Got the boat on no worries. Stopped for ice cream on the way back. Had just enough time to get cleaned up and get to the ballgame. Row 1 & 2, right behind home plate with 12 friends. Ended up being a pretty good birthday.

So ya, the boat. It's only "not started" once. It ended up being a clog in the check valve at the tank pick up. It requires dis-assembling the entire rear interior panels just to get to it. I can do it with a screw gun in about five minutes but, with a boat load of crew and gear and a screw driver, its a bitch. I took the tow. Hopefully I'll be able to get it blown out tomorrow night.

Until then, looking for thoughts and opinions on tanks, pick ups, lines, fittings, filters, what not. Hotrod guys, bulletproof fuel system hardware? Links?

Got in the boat real quick today. Turned the key to check that the fuel pump was operating properly and it sounds bad. Bad bad. It turns on and quickly looses all umph and just fades off line instead of running strong and stopping. I still need to pull the lines and check that it is dead but, it sure seems dead. This is the original fuel pump and is now discontinued and the replacement is a kit that includes a new pump and new cooler for $400. Grrr. The dealer is having me do a couple things to check it and also said I could bring it by once the lines and fittings have been cleared and they would throw a pressure gauge on it if I wanted. Between Ryan and Rick, I'm in good hands down at Custom Boat and Marine. Good folks.

I will update this as it progresses just in case somebody else has an issue with the same thing.

Feel free to post up thoughts and comments.

I have to agree with you on this. They have been nothing but fantastic to myself and my family. If you ever want to meet up for the RENO chapter of Tige owners let me know. HAHA! I think we are heading to Frenchmans this weekend.

Have you talked to Rick at all? He seems kinda kooky at first but once you get to know him he's super cool. Smart dude. He's been with the Glovers forever. He goes back to their race boat days.

Agreed. I have never had my boat break down. We are off for a week in Lake Powell so I hope it's not time now?

If I ever do need to be towed, Your example of attitude is a good one. I hope I handle it as well as you did. Thanks for posting up your experience. Dogbert will tell you to check the fuel regulator in addition to the fuel pump. It seems the new Ethanol fuel does a number on these parts?

Good luck on the resolution and as usual keep us posted on the outcome.

My experience with the fuel pressure regulator in cars/trucks, you can usually pinch off the fuel return line. If the car starts and runs fine then the FPR is to blame. But usually if the FPR fails it will affect your starts, and not cause the motor to stop running mid flight. I think you are on the right track with the fuel pump. But before you buy a fuel pump, see if you can spray some starter fluid in the carb...will that turn it over?

I'll figure it out today. I just haven't had a chance yet this week. I've got the day off today so, I'm gonna go get to it. Hopefully I can bum a ride from somebody this weekend.

Yeah, I have talked with Ricked. He was really nice to my son the day we took delivery of the boat. They were going back and forth about something. Wasn't paying to much attention as I was trying to stay focused on Ryan.

Well, I dragged the boat out and checked all the lines and they were clear as a bell. Charged the batt just to make sure it wasn't out of juice but, to no avail. Took it down to the dealer and both Rick and Ryan, upon hearing the fuel pump when I turned the key on both had the same reaction, "Ugh, that thing is dead." It's pretty obvious. It is a sad noise. Ordered one up. Should be here next week.

Looks like I'll be riding Tahoe at some point this weekend. Asked my buddy what the water temp was,"55. It might be up to 56 this weekend". Woo hoo.

Water is only cold while you're in it.

I've actually got a dry suit plus a hood, booties and some badass 5 mil. Nevin gloves. I've also got a full suit, shorty and even a wet shirt. I never use any of them, at least not since the kid was born. I might try to get back into some winter riding now that she is a bit older. The lake is a bitchin place when you are literally the only boat on it.

Well, $453 and 5 hours later, the boat is fixed, run out and put away. I probably could have done it much faster but, after 3 double Tanqueray & tonics, one Sierra Nevada and four Guiness last night, I've been in low gear all day. Pretty easy job. Everything went smooth except for the water hoses to the fuel cooler. Them things have been on there a long time. I got the outlet hose off somewhat easy compared to the inlet hose. I had to take that on off from the thermostat housing and pull the fuel unit out with it still attached. Other than that no big deal. Fired up on the first turn of the key and ran out perfect. Hooray.
