Hey guys its been a while since I have posted but hopefully someone can help me here. I have a 350 Mercruiser Tow Sports Mag and has been running rough. When I first get the boat into the water I have to advance the throttle to keep it running for a few seconds, and then once its warmed up and I pull the throttle from forward to neutral it dies sometimes, we have cleaned up the throttle body a little, put a new cap and rotor in, and have been messing with the iac. We got one from napa and cross referenced the part number and it turned out to be the same one a lincoln ls runs so we looked and it look like part of it is missing. I just called the marina and they said it could be the water seperator, anyone have any ideas or has this happened to anyone?

Couple things with boats that sit around... First off, pull the water-sparating fuel filter and drain it. You can fill it back up with clean gas if you want, or just install it back and the fuel pump will fill it in 20 seconds or so. Pour the gas from the filter into a 1 gal bucket and see if there's water. If so, then you likely have it in your tank as well. Id remove the fel line to the filter and stick the line in a bucket. Turn the key to ignition (dont start it) and let the bad gas pump into the bucket. (hope there's not much int he tank). Other thing is to read your plugs. Pull the wires off and take each plug out. If you have never read a plug, the electrode should be brown to tan in color. Sooty black is rich, white is lean and hot. Flat shiny black is what we call a wet cylinder, and usually means you got leaky valve guides.. or worse. If one is bad, replace them all. Check the plug wires to make sure none are grounding. Check the cap and rotor. If the cap is corroded, replace it. Same with the rotor. If it still runs shitty after this, you got other, more serious issues. So this monkey walks into a bar...

I'd second or third the crappy gas. When did it run properly last? If it hasn't been in the water since last season I would guess bad gas or water in your tank. If the tank wasn't full when you stored it over the winter or you didn't use a fuel stabilizer, chances are moisture may have gathered in your tank.
Also I'm surprised you changed the cap and rotor without checking or changing the plugs. What did you do with the IAC, I would leave that alone until you've isolated other problems.

Could be fuel of course, but in my case i know its not the fuel. I have gone through a couple of tanks of gas since getting it back. One other hitch in mine..previously i was able to start the boat without advancing the throttle at all. Now i have to advance the throttle to get it to start, let it run at a faster idle for a bit, and then pull it back to idle...sometimes it holds, sometimes i have to try it again.I'd rather be a conservative nut job than a liberal with no nuts and no job.

Glad you got it back on the water! So this monkey walks into a bar...
