    Lake Shasta water temps?

    Hey, anybody here from the Lake Shasta / Redding area? We're heading up in a few weeks and I'm curious about the water temp.

    From the webcams, the lake looks beautiful and FULL. Last time we rented a houseboat there, the lake was waaaay down, but super warm. Below are some comparison pictures.

    July 2008 - ~100' from full pool

    June 2011 - ~4' from full pool

    Top water (4' and above) is ranging 78-80 deg f. Thermal mark at 4' is 74 deg f... colder as you go deeper.

      Thanks Big D. Glad to hear it's so warm. Cold water doesn't bother me, but it does my wife and rest of the family.

      I was just concerned that with all the runoff, it was going to be considerably colder this year.

        The water temp up here has been weird this year, rapid changes, and difference between the surface to a few feet down, is more than I ever remember. I think you can count on 78. Oroville and shasta are very similar. We were out last week, and the surface was 80, but only like 1 foot down, it was mid 70s, it was very strange. And lots of warm and cold spots, but still the cold spot was maybe 74. My wife is the same way, you will be fine. And the lakes are GORGEOUS right now, just make sure you have an extra prop. Don't even launch your boat without an extra prop, and have a kit to change it with you. Lots of debris when the water is like this.

          What really changes in shasta is the depth at which you hit thermal. You may be pulling your knees up to your chest to stay in warm water in many coves.

            And make sure you have what you need to clean your strainer.. and if you dont have one.. GET ONE!

              I definitely keep an extra prop and kit with me all the time. Thanks for the heads up.

              I'm not too familiar with cleaning the strainer. Where is the strainer located and what do I need to have onboard to clean it?
