    Prop removal

    Gurus,

    I hit some a sandy bottom last weekend. Now I have an odd noise coming from my prop. The fins are curled a little, and I think that is where my new "noise" is coming from.

    I was only in 4' of water, barely at idle speed so I don't think it is the strut or prop shaft bearing.

    I spoke to the guys at Nettles in North Austin and they told me to pull it and bring it in. If that is the issue it will be resolved by reshaping.

    They sold me a puller today, ($70.00), and I've gotten the prop loose on the shaft, but it won't come all the way off. Is there some trick I'm missing to release the key?

    May need to swing the rudder one way or the other.

      It's loose, just catching on something. I have clearance to get it off of the shaft, but I don't want to force anything. Don't want to make a simple problem worse.

          Does the key stay inside the prop? Do I need to use a punch to get it out? If not, I will follow your advice and tap it with a mallet.

            The key-way is a separate piece, but can stay stuck to the prop or the shaft. If you think its the reason, then get it loose from the prop. Just dont dimple or mushroom it as it would hinder the reinstall.

                  You're lucky.. mine needed a lot more than just the puller it seemed... Well I used a nice automotive one.. but it worked none the less... Glad you got it off and still have all your fingers... Did you leave the nut on while removing it.. that is the number one thing to remember from what I have read (and learned as mine poped once it broke loose)..

                    I did leave the nut on, only because I read all the other posts I could find about prop removal.
