    Vinyl Repair Kits??

Has anyone tried any type of vinyl repair. I unfortunately have a small 1/2 inch tear on my front bow cushion and another area on back of my boat where vinyl is splitting from a seam, but its a tear not a stitching coming loose. I have read about vinyl repair kits just have never tried anything. Also would you guys agree that the colored vinyl accents are a thin piece of material, really soft and feels nice but i feel its kinda cheepo as it tears rather easily. Anyways any thoughts??

I just took one of my bow side cushions to a local repair guy yesterday. I am picking it up in the morning. It was $50. What he does is what he calls welding the vinyl. He puts it together then dyes it to match and textures it. I figured that was cheaper than me messing with it. From what I understand if you want it sewn they are referring to getting a new piece and sewing it. I have heard that it is hard to match the original so I decided to have him give it a try. I can report tomorrow and show a before and after.

My two cents it might be worth finding a local guy. How much are the kits? I am all about self fixing and have done a lot on my own. I just figured this was out of my league.

    Good luck.

For the small tears, I use super glue. Dab a little super glue on the area and the tear will not spread. Again, this is for small tears.

      Good luck.

Can you still order stuff for the older boats if you call Tige Direct? I have a problem with the seats in the back.. seems like most owners have this problem as this is where everybody sits in the back... I;m going to do a patch job I think... untill all of the seats start showing wear.. I also want to take the seats to like a dry cleaning place.. Hear me out.. I'm also going to buy some big cloth fabric and some elastic so that they can make some slip covers to go around the seats.. I usually end up putting towels there anyway.. since those seats get hot as there is no bimini coverage there.. and I will just use some towels that match that color of the boat.. I bet the dry cleaner ladies will do it for little money and over night.. those ladies are good!

Your local vinyl repair person might do the trick best. But if you don't have one of those, I would suggest looking for a "colorglo" rep. They are suppose to be all over tne country. We have used one locally for a repair job and it was exceptional. Just got through showing some friends the job. Asked them to tell me where it was made and I even pointed them within 1' of the repair they just couldn't see it. They guy we used was/is very detail oriented but I think most of the reps are good at what they do.

Just a thought. One hole the size of a cigarette butt, and two smaller holes and $85 bucks later it looks great.

I recommend against self-repair. I have tried it and it looks horrible.

You can get kits at Home Depot or Lowes.

If you do try, the 2 things to be very wary of is the color matching. I took my time and did lots of blending and finally got a really good match. The really tough one was the heat that has to be applied to the texture pad. Too much and you will burn the material, too little and it will peel up the patching material. Also, in the Sun, after a period, my patches that looked pretty good at one point, now look dark brown and burnt.

Perhaps you will have much better luck than me!

Here are the before and after. I know it is few and far between any more but this was a deal done with a handshake. I think the guy did a great job and it was quick. He said if there were any problems to call him back.

Anyone in Denver needing repairs ,he does more than boats, check out Atlas Vinyl. He is mobile as well.

Back to doing it your self, this was done by a guy that has been doing this for about 35 years and is recognized by many dealers in this area as the best. It is still not perfect and I would hate to see what I would do to it.

Yeah man.. Too bad you have to custom order for the Tige's.. WTF.. we should be 1st on the list.. especially with the notoriously bad vinyl found in the earlier models..

When you state "the notoriously bad vinyl found in the earlier models", how do you define earlier models i.e what years?

It seems to be most models pre 08. Worse the farther back you go.
