    Dumb Question...

When do the engine hours actually register.. With the boat key simply turned to the on position...with the boat running... or does the boat have to be running and in gear to register hours?? just curious because I could have sworn my boat should have more than 306 hours.. I bough it with 248 I think about 3 season ago and I like to think I use it a lot.. probably put about 10 hours on it this last week!

Is this how they all work because I think mine may have been rewired or something.. I don't seem to register hours unless it is running for sure.. not so sure about it having to be in gear though..

Most work off of a Hobbs switch, which registers when there is oil pressure... so if the boat is running and has greater than 4 psi of oil pressure... youre buring hours. Older boats work off of key position. My '95 burned hours on the key, while the new one runs from the Hobbs switch.

What about with the key turned to the accessories position?

So even when it was idleing did it get hours then? I was thinking that mine was only registering hours while in gear...thank for the info btw

I dont believe it puts hours on with it in the acc position.

                  Yes with idling..
No with ACC and engine not running.

I don't even have an ACC position...So doest that mean I have a different ignition switch?

                      I have an 06 - 24V.
Is it safe to say that if the motor is "not" running then the hour meter is not ticking? When the boat is anchored we use the stereo and I trust the hour meter is "not" running

Like bigdaddy said... Depends on your switch.

With my 2002 22I my hour meter on the dash would tick as long as the key was ON. ACC wouldn't log hours. Regardless of what your dash says, your engine will only log hours when it is running.

Hooking up the engine to a computer is the only way to get accurate engine hours.

                        Cheers,
                        Aaron

My hour meter hasn't worked since 20.9 hours. I refuse to pay 500 bucks for an effin Mini MMDC replacement. It's highway robbery I tell you...

If you have efi, the engine hours (running) are stored in the ECU. Otherwise, earlier boats with the key on for the gauge and that's really just a reference for service intervals. Newer boats when they're running.
