Jackson Lake - Decent sized shallow lake, not quite as busy as Boyd/Horsetooth/Cherry Creek/Chatfield on the weekends but it's open like Boyd is and there's nowhere to escape to once the water gets choppy. Watch out for the first few weeks of June as it gets some dead fish floating around in it. In late July/August the algae "turns" and the water gets nice and green.

Pueblo - one of the larger lakes in CO. We camped there one time and I think we camped in the wrong area because there wasn't a tree in site and the ground is slate(shale?) and the only shade is the 6' tall wind break that comes with your campsite. VERY HOT and watch out for rattlesnakes! There are some nice coves that you can take your boat in and get some halfway good water on a weekend but I didn't see any sand beaches the time I was there, everything was littered with chunks of slate.
This lake allegedly has/had mussels.

We know some people basically only go up to WY to boat. I have to travel anyways so knowing where the good places around the area are is a bonus.

Carter - I agree with jmitchell on that one. My buddy TJ that is on here goes there a few times a week and really likes it. It is a nice lake but I just happened to be there the day that a drunk dad lost his 2 year old off of a tube in the lake and was never found so my wife is creeped out by that and doesn't like to go there. Nothing like ending your boating day to rescue divers, fire trucks and emergency response vehicles looking for a baby in a lake!
