How do I change the Solenoid??

Guys i went to start my boat and it just clicks once.... so I thought it was the battery... charged it.. charger says its fully charged.... voltometer says its got 13Volts.. so its time to change the Solenoid... Can I get this at NAPA or is there a special marine solenoid???

Also does anyone know of a Solenoid HOW TO?? I could make one if I knew what I was doing but I have never changed one before... i can learn tho I am pretty handy

If you get a solid "CLICK" it could be the starter and not the solenoid. That famous click sound is usually one of two things....the solenoid engaging a frozen starter or the starter gear engaging a locked up engine

Have a helper turn the key while you tap the starter with a small hammer. If it suddenly engages, it sounds like a stuck stater motor.

all you need to do is change the relay. very simple fix. they get corroded and cant touch the wire from starter and wire from ignition. they are about 20 bucks. the relay is bolted to the middle engine frame. to ensure this is it have someone turn the key and you can lean in there and hear the relay clicking.

Whatever you do don't hit the starter to hard, I broke one that way a long time ago.

I just changed mine and it starts up fine every time now. The link that TRD posted has a picture of the solenoid but the thread refers to it as a relay. It takes about 7 minutes to change, 4 wires and 2 bolts and cost me $22.

A good way to determine if it is the relay (shown in the photo on the other thread) is to jumper across from one of the large top terminals to the other. If your starter will not run with the key in start, but it will turn when you jumper the terminals, it is likely this part. If the starter still just clicks, it is likely the starter solenoid (on the starter motor) or the starter itself.

X3 on the relay and do the jumper method to determine if it'll start.

ok couple questions before I run to NAPA this afternoon and get some parts... need to have this running by sunday


1) To Jumper the terminal I just connect them by touching a wire to bolt exposed bolt heads correct?

2)My starter has "SAE J1171 Marine" on it... i take this is the starter serial number but does a new starter need to be specially ordered for a marine engine or will NAPA have this in stock?


3) What part number is the slave "relay/solenoid" that has those 2 bolts?


I am trying to get my act together so I can get this fixed for the weekend... the wife won't be happy if its not running..... and you know what that means

I will get the relay/solenoid number tonight when I get home. I still have one in the package. I don't know the number of the starter but will look at mine to see if I can find one.

Napa Solenoid 18-5817 (replaces: Mercury/Mariner 89-96158 vertical post)

Starter: the only number that brings up starters is the SAE J1171 number. Here is a web site I found, but I'm not sure which one you would use. I found 2 other numbers but they don't match anything. Hope this helps.

There was some posts w/ a parts list for our engines, I had it bookmarks but when my computer went I lost is. I can't remember what the web site was but it was for Mercruser engines. Put in your s/n and all the parts were listed.

TRD... thanks so much!! I actually went to NAPA last night with the BAD solenoid and they gave me the wrong one so that part number was CLUTCH!!! thx again



Also I was jumping for joy went I jumped the solenoid ... one because I actually found the problem.... two its such an easy fix!!
