Imagine surfing behind your boat (2005 24V) and you see smoke coming out your bilge vents. Not the best way to start a weekend. Stopped surfing and turned the battery switch off immediately. To keep the story short, I found that the positive cable had been rubbing on the heat sink for the Perfect Pass unit mounted above the port battery. Once the cable made contact with the heat sink, it grounded out the unit, which began melting the insulation on the perfect pass cable that connects to the throttle linkage. This then began grounding the Morris cable to the throttle and so on. The cruise unit still works but the cable to the unit is cooked and will need to be replaced. The Morris cable finally freed up to give us 3/4 throttle so we enjoyed the next day without cruise and no ballast since it was a bitch to hold the speed steady.
All fine UNTIL we see the welds on the tower (stock Tige Tower for 05) are broken on both sides and the tower is about to drop on the boat. The welds broke and ripped the aluminum just above the board racks where the tubes come together.
We made it home from the lake (3 hours) with the tower folded down on the deck. Not sure how to proceed with the tower issue. I need to find a cable for the perfect pass (Tige version) and I will need to get a new throttle since the 12v charge has melted most of the grease in the cable.
I suppose we are lucky that the boat did not go down in flames and the tower did not completely snap while pulling somebody.
Any ideas with my issues are appreciated.
