    Starting glitch??

So my Tige developed a starting glitch after I installed the add a battery system. The first time I attempted to start it I turned the key and heard a click and then nothing. It did this about 4 times then started up fine. Afterward, after sitting for a while it does it again but only on the first attempt then starts up fine. It seems to be pretty consistent. Any ideas?

Sounds obvious, but check for tightness of all battery connections. Simple and cheap first.

That's what I thought also so I checked all my connections and they are all good. I also tested the whole system with a voltmeter and everything checked out fine. The click is not a series of clicks like a low battery, just one click then silence. Then it starts up fine on the second try.

We had to replace the relay on the top of the motor next to the red reset button. The motor would click and then start, but it continually got worse. Have someone look at and listen to that relay while someone else hits the key. I think it was like 20 bucks.

It was a pleasantly easy and cheap fix. Hope that is all it is for you, too.

Could you get this part at a local parts store?

A buddy of mine mentioned that relay also. That's where I will start. Thanks.

it is for sure the relay. Mine has done the same thing twice and it was the relay both times. The relay touches the wire from the starter to the hot wire from battery. Corrosion will build up in the relay and when it pushes up to touch the two together the corrosions blocks it making it click. It is a really easy fix relay cost about 20 bucks.

It is easy to bypass the relay. Remove the cover and, with the ignition switch ON, jumper the two large terminals. If the starter runs, that is the problem. I had this part fail 3 times in 20 yrs on my old Mercury stern drive. I carried a jumper wire on the boat.

This may have answered my question, but want to make sure. If it is, I have changed it once already. Would it be the one w/ the red line going to it?
                          thanks

I was under the impression it was one of those square boxes.

It is the upper device with the exposed terminals. There are two small wires near the base coming from the ignition switch (start position, and the two larger wires make the circuit from the battery to the solenoid on the starter.
