Set a new personal record tonight..... not a good one

A buddy with a Tige here let his block freeze. I told him I'd help him fix it. He got REALLY lucky though, we found a freshly machined 4 bolt main block for $500 and also got an extra set of vortech heads and a crank for that price. He lucked out, the machinist did a good job on it. He got a smokin deal, considering when he sells the heads (if he doesn't need them) and crank he'll be out hardly anything.

Motor was pulled in 45 mins, and had the old motor totally stripped to bare block in an hour and half between the two of us. I've discovered not stopping for beer breaks, speeds things along quite nicely! LOL Which the hour and half down to bare block was the new record for me.

I'll post up some pics when I get the time this weekend. I meant to take pics every step of the way, but I got tired of taking my gloves on and off so I could handle the damn iphone. The chocolate milk slurry really made a mess. The crack is quite impressive though.

One thing I found interesting, I thought I remembered my motor being a 4 bolt main, but when I tore into his marine power it was a 2 bolt. Oh well, not like it matters in this application.

I won't be around tomorrow, but I'm making him clean it tomorrow, Friday evening we'll assemble it, and drop it in Sat. morning, assuming I don't need part of Sat. morning to finish assembly. Stay tuned for pics!

You keep talking like that you may just get in my pants nickypoo. But get me liquored up first

But no seriously, I've learned if someone wants to learn motors, buy a boat. LoL

His boat must me a direct drive it you had the engine out in 45 minutes.

I think we swapped mine out in 11 hours, without a beer break.
The luck is gone, the brain is shot, but the liquor we still got.

This is funny. When I started working here I didn't know anything about engines. I remember needing to put plugs and wires on my truck. I was afraid not to do it because what the guys here would say. I have learned so much since I been here and at least now I will try and fix it now. I may not know how to pull an engine out but what I don't know I can find out.

Nope vdrive. I pulled the wiring harness and connections and starter while he worked on removing the muffler and thermostat housing. We also pulled the risers for more clearance. Removed fuel line and disconnected a few hoses, and hooked her up to the forklift. As we were lifting I yanked the damper and flywheel, then the motor came right out. 45-50 mins. I looked at the clock when we started. First time I did it took 2 hours

Dang--this son of a son of a farmer* would love to be a helper/tool-$%#$! on a job like that. I have a basic concept of what that job entails, but no actual experience.

If anyone within 2 hours driving distance of KC is doing a project like that, PM me and I'll bring a broom, work gloves and beer...and try not to get in the way. I may actually be useful towards the end of the job or the next time around.

*grandpa & dad could probably do that job from farm experience. But I grew up in a suburb and thought I was mechanically handy because I could mix gas/oil for our 2cyl LawnBoy and change the oil in my '70 Maverick & '74 Gremlin. I'd love to learn how to tear down & rebuild an engine from the block up.

murphini - just buy a cheap project car and go for it! One thing I learned from tearing the engine out of my Corvette is that there are so many online resources, you can literally do anything because all you have to do is post up your issue and someone will have an answer for you.

                  Nice work Tanner!

Well my buddy is definitely getting a crash course in motors on this one. But it's cool, cause he's learning how everything interacts. He won't be able to diagnose a problem from this, but after researching on the internet he'll be able to tear down the motor to get to his problem if one arises. Assuming it's not electrical.

I feel your pain. I had the same crack two seasons ago.

Update, I asked him to magnaflux the heads but he opted to just let a visual inspection pass. I had him cleaning the heads and positions up while I was gone. He just called me and found a small crack in the same head that the block was cracked. It was covered by gasket material. That's why u should have ur heads checked folks. and manifolds pressure tested. Lucky for him he got the spare set.
