I'm not sure on the older Boatmate trailers, but on my 2011, there were 2 sets of blue wires at the wiring harness. You have to fold the tongue out to see which one goes to the brake solenoid and which one goes to the tail lights. Works like a champ now. For the other wires, just do a Google search for trailer wiring diagram to find the wiring diagram for your plug.

I had this same issue last season and used the key all the time. Now I pulled it out for the first time this year thinking I would have to replace that solenoid and it's working perfectly again...
      Waiting for another good one!

Do you have a different tow vehicle? maybe there was a issue with the trailer plug

          2008 F-250.

But the odd thing was it worked initially last year then quit. And now it works perfectly again this year... so far.

I had the exact problem with my 2002 Ford Expedition. You are missing a relay in the fuse area in the engine compartment. Not to be confused with the fuse box under the dashboard. Check your owners manual and compare it to what you have in the area. You will find that you are missing the relay. Ford will tell you that your trailer is wired incorrectly but once you put that relay in, you will have it working as normal.

It works some of the time now because you are not putting enough pressure on the solenoid (sp?) When you are backing up. Good luck and let us know if you get it resolved.

Ops, the relay is in your cab. Look at page 238 of the user manual. Make sure that you have fuse/relay location #10 and #14 are occupied. I would image that #10 is already there but #14 is missing.
