Board rack bungee cord

I just got this 2011 RZ2 and on the board racks there is a slot for a surf board to fit in, but why is the bungee cord to short to wrap around the board?

So how is everyone securing there surf boards using the stock board rack bungee cord?

Anyone want to comment on putting your surf board in the racks? I was told that isn't a good idea due to the sun and warping or putting dents in the board. At least with the higher end boards that is. Anyone else have thoughts on this. The board we have, I would think it would NOT be a good idea to let it sit there backing in the sun in a board rack. We keep outs in a locker if we aren't using it.
