    test drive questions

Hubby and I are taking a 2003 22v Tige our for a test run today in Arizona. What are some things we should be looking for? I read about cracks from the tower on this forum, where should we look for those? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, we arenew to boat ownership.

Cracks on the tower will most likely be near the welds. Also check the hull around the tower legs.

Welcome to the site and good luck on your search.

One way that I have found cracks was to actually wakeboard using the tower. When the boarder cuts from side to side and there is pressure on the tower people in the boat might be able to hear the tower popping.

In addition to that, check the hull for blistering (bubbles in the gelcoat where water has managed to penetrate it). Even small ones could turn into problem down the road. If the boat has sat in the water for an extended period of time, they are rather likely.

One minor annoyance I had to deal with (very common) was replacing the steering cable. if it takes 2 hands to turn a corner, that project will probably be in your near future.

One last thing to mention - I just bought an 08 Tige and thought it looked pretty clean when I went to test drive it. Once I got it home, I unbolted some of the seats and found mud and leaves under them. The seats had blisters on them that were in some cases rather large. I guess a ton of moisture and grossness just built up in there over the years and was never cleaned up. It's not the end of the world, but it's a good indication how well someone takes care of their boat...

I don't think that tower cracks were common by the 2003 towers. The ones with a history of issues were older Metcraft towers from the 1999-2001 era, I believe.

You should still take a look over the tower and its welds, but that year should not have the infamous "Metcrap" version.
