Too Many Hours???

The fade is a perfect line all the way around the boat, roughly at the bottom of the graphics and down. It is very consistent and even. Obviously sat in the water too long, or so I'm guessing..? The owner was suggesting an epoxy coating on the bottom, similar to a house boat? I would think the thickness would not match nor would it look right

I went at it for hours... Got it pretty good, then got sick of it and hired my buddy that does mobile details for the rest.

Looks like a few pads on a polisher and MANY hours in the driveway. I did a similar job on my old boat. Start with a polish or cleaner compound (as light as possible) and slowly work up to a compound that gets desired results, then hit it with a layer of polish and seal/protect it with a good wax or sealer like zaino. Get a buddy and pay him with beer, it goes a little faster and funner.

Dom. Good guess!! I wouldn't hesitate a second on that chevy, unfortunately I drove 7 hours (round trip) to see a boat that appeared to never have seen a cover or an ounce of care in two years. Paint fading, multiple interior rips and cuts, major gel coat dings, etc.. After wasting an hour discussing it he offered an 09 Z1 that presented an entirely different set of complications..
The boat looks good from a distance, but up close the paint from the water line and below is fading. The pricing offered is decent and he is researching with a dealer if they can fix the issue. Anyone have any insight on this type of fading?
I could not find any "blisters"
How about warranty, the boat only being 2 years old, and used for only one, I would think this could be a warranty issue? Thoughts? I will try to post pics tomorrow. 240 hrs on this one

So the guy you are considering buying from has 2 abused boats?

I would be suspicious of him, especially if the first boat was improperly advertised as being in good shape. It still might be a good deal, but definitley the sort of situation where you want a good test drive and an expert to inspect it.

The 09 he bought from a dealer that was going out of business, as a repo.. He did not have this one listed but offered it when he realized i was disapointed with the 08. The test drive is a must. They have the boat serviced by the local Mastercraft dealer.

A friend of mine bought a 2009 Epic from a similar sort of place. Kind of like a timeshare. It has 230 hours on it and it seems to be working out very well so far.

Like they pointed out above, it is pretty unlikely that the discoloration is something that a good bit of elbow grease cannot solve, as long as the gelcoat is intact (no blisters).

If the boat has good records of all services 700hrs is not bad, ive said in other threads 100hrs equates ruffly to 8000 car miles, so would you hesitate to buy a 60,000 mile well maintained 5.7 chevy truck?
And I dont want any wise remarks from the Ford ,Dodge, and other truck brand guys out there starting an all new tread again.ha ha ha !

60k miles seems low to me. 100 hours to most of us is probably a good full year. Most of our trucks probably get 10 to 15k miles a year and unless your towing the whole time, the truck hours are probably under less strain. I would say 100 hours on a boat is equal to 15 or 20k miles on a car because of how we drive boats. I'm not saying 700 hours would kill the deal for me, but if trying to compare it to miles, I'd say it's well over 100,000 miles.

My 2002 has 640 hours and is running smooth but I bought it 2 years old with 200 hours in immaculate condition and I have done my best to continue that care.

Service records only show the service. Looking at the boat should give you an idea of how the boat was treated. With so many people selling boats in these times, I wouldn't rush into buying one that looks trashed.

I would treat the boat as I would a rental car, the maintance may be very good but there were most likely people using the boat that did'nt care near as much about the boat as many of us would. I would say there is no good mile to hour equation to fit every boat. I tried to buy a 2006 Mastercraft X-star for a customer that was missing the prop, all the stereo components, covers, ballast, heater core, and didnt run right with 370 hours and it brought over 40k at a wholesale auction, from what I have seen there are not much for cheap boats unless you really find the right situation. You have to remember wet sanding the gel will take care of it and should look new but when you are taking the top layer off to get back to good solid gel you are thinning it out, and may not last forever.
