Now I say "I never turn down gas money." And I say it with a smile.

Some folks arrive and offer some cash. Some don't. I don't press. Boats and lakes are memory-creating machines and it's worth it to me to have our friends along even if they can't/don't/won't contribute.
    Thats a great line!!

X2 but I don't turn down $$$ if someone hands it to me. But for the most part it is a lot more fun to share. I tell everyone this.

I pay for the boat and gas. I only ask you repect the boat. take care of it. Keep it clean as possible and help clean up the boat at the end. In other words you are pulling out of the parking lot at the same time as I am.

I agree that we should not expect any money from someone we invited to hang out with on the boat. I also agree it is a lot more fun with friends, and to see how excited the other family is fun for us. On the other hand, the last 2 years I turned away money that was offered. This year I may be a little more open to taking a few bucks here and there to help with the gas cost.

I invite the folks to come boat with us the same if we Invited someone over to Dinner, and I do not expect payment for that either. The way I look at it is we are going to be out on the lake whether I have guests or not and when we do have guests on the boat it is enjoyable for us as well as them.
Though I would never turn down pro football and baseball tickets either.

Sorry to hijack, but I couldn't resist. Wallamc and myself live in the Cincinnati area, and if you had our NFL team you might turn down the tickets. I couldn't force myself to renew my season tix this year after having them the last 9 years. What a train wreck.

I just take people cause I want to. Their smiles and the memories are payment enough.

If you want to charge for a ride. I'd suggest to come up with a price that you are comfortable with and be straightforward and ask.

What do you mean by Hijack? We are talking payment and any dollar amount, goods or services offered for barter including tickets to a professional sports game are perfectly acceptable. I know it is a stretch to include Bengal tickets in that group but they would qualify
J/K my team is the niners

and back on subject I can't remember any time where I have ever turned down anyone handing me cash. I just won't ask.
I just have never taken anyone out boating who I did not invite for a day on the lake and most of my friends will ask what they should bring, maybe I'll try WAB's line this season

I dont charge friends for a day trip. If we go on a weekend trip I may say, "hey we are going to the lake for the weekend, if you would like to go we are all gonna split the cost." and then name everyone thats going. if there is someone who wants to go but cant afford it, We make sure they go and we will cover their part or if we cant afford it we will check with the others going to see if we can all cover their share. Money is just money and can be made any day of the week but a good friend is more than that and are hard to come by.

High gas prices mean less boats on the lake, which means we can power turn more often.
