    Shattered Glass

I just picked up my boat from the upholsterer. New seats look good. Got about 15 minutes from their shop, and when I looked in my rearview mirror my walkthru windshield glass was shattered. Anyone have this happen while driving? Glass everywhere. Any tips on getting all the small shards from the carpet?

The window was shut and latched.

Sorry to hear about the windshield, that's going to be a pain. I used my regular house vac and a head that has spinning bristles on it to get up glass in my truck after the side window was broken out. It seemed to work well, but I didn't have to worry about bare feet. How much work did you have done on the upholstery? Pictures??

Been there. The glass is tempered and should just be small chunks. There shouldn't be any shards. A good shopvav should be fine.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

I was driving home when I made the original post - so couldn't upload photos. I forgot to take a pic of the mess, sorry guys - you should have seen it - glass in every cup holder, every crevice, everywhere. Had an hour and half drive home, and didn't want the glass everywhere on the trip, so I turned around and went back to the shop. They helped me shop vac the entire thing and I removed the window frame for the trip home since there was still some glass in it that would have shaken out on the trip.

Here is a pic of the window frame. I always check the mirror, and there was no way that it hit and broke. So I still don't know what happened - rock, bird, somebody shoot at me??? Could the frame get twisted enough to shatter everything? My bottom latch is always firm and flush, but the top one is loose and doesn't really do anything - could that have something to do with it??

Thinking about just leaving it off. Only time we close that window is when towing or when the cover is on it. Anyone else just take the window off?

Seats look much better. Replaced all the bottom cushions and the top rail. No photos yet since its dark. Had planned to be home with sunlight left, but the shattered window messed up my plans.

Yes, small chunks of glass, but there is a tiny shard lodged somewhere in my thumb right now - so I know there are some small ones that I couldn't see to pick up. Will probably wipe all the seats down, and vacuum multiple times. The shards are probably not big enough to cause a major cut or anything, but enough to make my little kids not happy.

If a window is going to break on your boat, that is the best one. At least you can have it replaced easily.
I would just leave it off like you asked about. Either mount your existing mirror on the drivers side window or get a tower mounted mirror bracket.

Sorry to hear about that, bummer. However, because my hinge side does not fit well and one of the plastic keepers has broken, I just take mine off for the entire summer. It never gets closed anyway.

Pics of upholstery. Had the bottom cushions and the top rail replaced. Did not replace the back deck or the middle back part, as it was all still in good shape.

I think this same thing happened to sky ski_Tige who lives in Conroe. He was just trailering home and it shattered. He said he would always trailer with the cover on after that but it probably wouldn't have mattered.

The upholstery looks great in the photos!

We never use the glass while boating (always open) but I do cover the boat as a matter of practice, so the window is closed at that point.

                            I wonder how it happened.

                              Interior looks sweet!

Ya, mine happened on the way home from the lake. My guess was that it was just a rock. Chit happens. I took it down to a window company that I have dealt with for years. They charged my $6 to put in a new piece of tempered glass. No biggie.
