    battery question

This coming week i will be taking delivery of my new RZR, as soon as i get it i will be installing a second set of tower speakers 9 mb8i's, a bigger 2nd amp ( syn 4 ), and replacing the free air 10" with a dvc 12" with a custom built box. The boat will come stock with 2 batteries ( i think they are interstate and im not sure the size or model number ) and the way they are set up from the factory is one runs the stereo and electronics and the other strictly for starting and bilge. Should i add a second battery for the stereo? How long approx is the one battery going to last with the stereo jamming in a cove with the boat off before it dies? And lastly if i do need to add a 3rd battery how should i wire it in and is the factory charging system going to keep it charged as well?

list of stereo equipment that will be in the boat total

    6 ws inboat speakers
    1 ws dvc 12"
    2 ws mb8i's
    2 ws pro 60's
    1 syn 6
    1syn 4

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Congrats on the new boat and welcome to the site.

I think u will need a mini powerplant onboard to run all that audio but it will rock like crazy. Have fun.

I'm going to be doing something similar to you in terms of stereo: MB8's and Pro 60's on the tower, 12" sub, and 6 Wet Sounds cabin speakers. I'm running 3 amps -- 600 watts each.

I decided to go with three Interstate batteries and a Perko switch. The Perko has 4 settings -- off, 1, 2, and all. I'll have one battery connected to the "1" on the switch and the other two on the "2". The plan is to run the stereo in the cove off the two batteries on the "2" and leave the other for starting.

      At least that's the plan . . .

        They are a Group-24 with about 100hrs.

Adding a 2nd battery to the house bank is as easy as wiring the new battery in parallel (+ to +/- to -) with the existing house battery. BUT, I would not rely on the alternator to recharge those 2 batteries when depleted. If run hard, it can be stressful of the alt when you fire up the engine and it "sees" to dead batteries. It would be a good idea to have a means to isolate that 2nd house form the primary house for those days that they are run low. This allows you to cut the bank in half before the engine is restarted. That way, the alternator only sees a single depleted battery. Add to this, a means to recharge the system once back at home or the slip.

Cant tell you the brand, but if they are still rolling with what they have in the past, it will be a diode type isolator.

So would the Tige isolater need to come out of the system? I may add a third battery but not sure if I should go to a 4 swith perko as I only currently have an on/off? I do have an on-board charger already but would need another if seperating the two house batteries?

Not necessarily. Even though the diode iso's have a .7V voltage drop, this would not create an issue with your house bank as you would have an on-board charger to bring them back up to par.

I would swap the on/off for a multi-battery switch, period. This gives you ability to use the house bank as a backup starting battery if ever needed.

Is you charger a single out duel bank?

Not sure? its Pro mariner pro sport 12.

Which switch do you like best? I have looked at the perko and the blue sea.

Being a 12A, it might be best to use it for the house bank and either leave the starting battery by itself, or get a small maintainer just for it. If the house battery(s) is really depleted, it will take 12A's to "jump-start" it charging. A low amp trickle will just not get it excited so to speak.

Most of the the time I use the Blue Sea, but sometimes I will order a Guest if my supplier is out of the Blue Sea. The Perko has such a large footprint, but doesnt accept multiple cables as nicely as the Blue Sea. The Blue Sea will also accept the cable from 3 sides as opposed to the Perko.

I think I will start with adding the switch. I havent determined if I need the third battery yet, yes.. I will be running over 3000watts but I am not a party cover.

The amount of engine off play time you want to achieve the have the biggest impact on how many batteries (or Ah's) you need. Knowing that do not do the party cove scene much, the factory EIDB system with a charger for the house battery will probably do ya.

I think I will add a third for piece of mind, upgrade to a pro sport 20 and get the blue sea switch. Third battery just needs to be wired in parallel to the house battery correct? How much rewiring to change out the current on/off to the 4 switch blue sea will be required?

Great batteries. Although a quality lead-acid (wet-cell) marine deep-cycle is a great bang for the buck, solid, tested technology, the AGM (absorbed glass mat) like the Kinetik, will handle deeper and repeated charge/discharge cycles as compared to a lead-acid.

They also dont seem to require a higher charge voltage like the Gel-cell Optima, so I much prefer to run these in a mixed battery setup over running a wet-cell and Optima.
