Flickering lights on speedo/ Trailer question

I have recently noticed that when traveling in the dark, the speedo and tachometer back lights flicker when hitting some chop. Anybody have a solution?

Also, I have an Extreme trailer with surge brakes. In order to reverse, I have to stick a "key" in the slot on the tongue to prevent the brakes from engaging. This seems very primitive as some of my other friends have Extreme trailers as well and don't have to do this. I pull it with a 2002 Chevy Suburban. Do I need a special adaptor for the electrical hookup?

There should be a way to connect your reverse lights to the 5th wire on your trailer on my extreme trailer the wire is blue. On my expedition there is a relay that you can plug in to activate the back up light on the 7 pin connector but I just wired it directly from the back up lights. Once there is power to the trailer wire then the brakes will release and you can back up w/o a problem.

The speedo sounds like a loose ground or wire somewhere.

I had the same problem, but it was ALL my lights. If your '01 has the same setup as far as my '04s circuit breaker panel, check behind there- thats probably where you've got a wire loose. Could also be directly behind your speedo.

Your Extreme Trailer probably has drum brakes. The new trailers have disc brakes that dis-engage when the reverse lights are lit. Extreme can do the brake and wiring upgrade for you, but I think it was pretty expensive. I use my key.
