Where do you store your boards

    Hey people,

Had a curiosity as to where people store their boards throughout the winter months, well summer too. I just recently put a couple boards in the attic and my girlfriend told me that it was a bad idea, that her dads snow ski's had been ruined because he kept them in the garage. Anyways i thought wakeboards were made of fiberglass throughout so they would be ok in cold or heat, but then again i would hate to ruin anything especially as pricey as these things are. anyways just asking

That's just silly. Snow skis that can handle cold? Your wife is misinformed.

usually ski's go bad during storage because they have been improperly maintained.. not putting a layer of storage wax on your ski's during storage can cause the base to dry out and potentially ruin the skis. also if the core is exposed on any of the edges and water seeps into it and freezes the base and core can separate.

we store our surf and wakeboards in our cabin.. during the winter the heat is only set to 60, so nothing has a chance to freeze, but i would imagine that the cold wouldn't effect anything unless they have water on them and any cracks in the fiberglass that could potentially split

I keep everything that can fit on the boat and the rest in the garage. I'm in Southern California, where we generally don't get below freezing.

All of mine are in the basement.

Storage wax? I've never heard of such a thing. I've had my snowboard since 1996 and it has been stored everywhere with no issues and certainly no "storage wax".

I made some board racks out of 3/4" emt. To protect the boards I used foam pipe insulation. The racks are lagged to the studs wich are 16" oc, so the racks are approx. 30" long and extend from the wall approx. 16". They support wake boards easily. If you need any more info let me know. I will try to upload some pics.

Great idea, jealous of your garage! Winter stored in a closet in spare bedroom, summer, stored in boat or garage.

When we rebuilt our snow-destroyed boathouse a couple of years ago, my wife and 8YO son built some board racks for equipment storage. They used vertical 2x6's with one inch holes drilled into them. Then a piece of one inch dowel was glued into each hole. Finally each dowel was covered with one inch pipe insulation to cushion the boards. Vertical spacing was determined by the tallest wakeboard bindings we had, plus a bit extra for future margin.

The result was a minimal floorspace footprint but storage for (IIRC) six boards, each one gently cradled on foam and not touching anything else. Works and looks awesome, and made a great Mother-Son project of which both are justifiably proud.

The boathouse is not heated and we often get subzero temperatures in the winter. No ill effects so far.

it is a coat of "summer" or warm weather wax that is put on the board and not scraped off. this layer of wax keeps the base drying out. not all snowboards and ski's have a drying problem, it depends on the kind of base your board has. usually do about 20-30 storage waxes a year, mostly on softer based boards, that will be stored in high temperature places (like a storage unit that has no ventilation).

I do wax my snow skis at the end of the season, and leave them coated until the start of the next season. Mostly to prevent oxidation of the steel edges. I just use regular wax, though, because then a quick scrape and I'm ready to hit the slopes.

thats why we use "warm or summer" wax.. because the temps are usually correct for that type of wax at the start of the next season. and yes the wax also helps with edges rusting as well

I've never waxed my board for storage. Ever. I've been snowboarding for 20+ years now and skiing 10 years before that. Just sayin.

I used some rubber coated garage storage hooks from the Depot. $.99 a piece. They are set in the studs. That's about it.

x2, but mine are from Lowes, 5 bucks a pair, and mounted them in studs too. I use them to hold my wakeboards, surfboards, snowboards and skis.

Apparently I overpaid for my board rack augmentation
