Water intake valve?

Has anyone installed a valve before the v-drive unit to attach a garden hose to instead of a fake lake? I am a little gun shy of the fake lake, Ihave seen one fall off while the moter was running. I was thinking of adding a y-valve of some sort. Was wondering if anyone else had done this and how well did it work? Thanks for your input.

It cost a little more than some homemade "T" shut off flushy thing you can make but they work well and are very easy to insatll. They have a spring in them that shuts off flow to bottom of the boat when you turm the hose on so all the water is directed towards the engine. we install them on pretty much every boat we sell and have never had an issue.

I have one installed. It was easy to and didnt cost nearly that much. A couple of short nipples a tee and a 1/4 turn ball valve. Works like a charm. Only negative is running a hose over the side of the boat. My boat is in storage or I would post up some pics. Sorry. Oh yea make sure you stay with brass.

You can use that system and drill a hole at the rear of the boat for the water intake or garden hose

I have strongly considered doing that, as my previous boat had an actual hose connector that was really convenient. I have an existing valve setup that I use when winterizing my jetski engines, so all I really need is an appropriate fitting. I'd probably just disconnect the 1.25 inch hose from the raw water filter and connect the hose valve directly to the hose.

Then I'd just have to feel bad about the incredibly expensive Fake-a-Lake that I would have used exactly once.

The advantage to the perko inline over home made is that you dont have to turn the valve off to flush , and than if you forget to turn the valve back on you fry the pump as a lot do .

I have updated mine to use a quick coupler to connect my garden hose. So I dont worry about leaving the valve open anymore. I could just take the valve out but I like having the safety factor there.

It may seem like a hassle but my water intake on the bottom of my boat is right under a cross beam on my trailer so a fake a lake is a real PITA.

Mine is like that, too. My Fake-a-Lake must sit at an odd angle to mate up with the intake. It does work, though.

I have heard of an inline valve failing and nearly sinking the boat, but that was just once. Most of the time, they are pretty darn reliable, and a lot of people use them.

Trying to wrestle the hose off the intake has got to be a major PIA on a V-drive. Standing on your head squished in a small compartment...no thanks.

Many boats, including mine, have an inline filter as mentioned. My inline filter is mounted near the top of the engine compartment and is readily accessible.

But other things are extremely inconvenient, I agree. I am jealous of the engine access provided by a direct drive!

And I should be clear that putting a garden hose on the inline unit would be a piece of cake compared to undoing a hose clamp and trying the wrestle the hose off of the intake. If I had much use for one, I wouldn't hesitate to get an inline filter.
