One tough impeller

Some one was asking me about these but I forget who it was....

Anyhow these impellers are good. They claim to be able to run dry for 15 but I won't be testing it.

Awsome link hanzj! Their site only shows one model for Mercruiser inboards #2000. I know there are various models, sometimes within the same year. I'll have to check it out further.

Well, your impeller will be good, but what about running your engine for 15 minutes without any water? Doesn't sound very wise to me to have a $30 part that is good, but to overheat and blow a $5000 engine???? I'd be wary of using something like this.

I agree. I don't know why anyone would run without at least a fake-a-lake hooked up. I went with the Globe with the idea it might last a little longer.

I'm concerned about the 15 minute run dry claim. That's great. However, does the impeller stand up to a tough winter in Wisconsin without breaking apart in the spring? I read the problem with most impellers is not that owners run them dry, it's the winter storage that kills them.

That is also my understanding about the impellers. The impellers get dry and take a set. When they are used the blades break or do not make good seal against the pump wall. Use is not the cause of the demise of the impellers, but non-use.

I would still replace the impeller each year at the start of the season when the oil is changed. A critical component, that is not that expensive, should not be overlooked.

I think the major reason the impeller is better, is the properties it is made out of. It states, "made of elastomer compounds." I don't think that it can run dry for 15 minutes is it's main attribute. That just gets your attention to show how tough and durable it is. When I remove my standard rubber one it has small cracks around the vanes. Mostly because the rubber gets dry and brittle during the winter storage.

I would imagine this composite impeller does increase the service life. It should be more durable and flexible.

If you ever do any suspension work on your vehicles, you probably used polyurethane bushings instead of the standard rubber ones. They are just superior in performance and longevity.
It is always wise to inspect and monitor it as Ray does each year, regardless of which one you use.
