Impeller Changed - No Gasket??

Guys, I changed my impeller today (just bought the boat in Dec, so doing a lot of maintenance before boating season is here). When I pulled off the plate, there was no existing gasket or O-ring. The plate had a lip on it that sinks into the housing - is that enough to keep it from leaking? Yes the new one came with a gasket and O-ring, but I could not figure out how the new one is supposed to fit in there.

Is my Marine Power 5.7L supposed to have a gasket? Or can I go without it? I didn't want to fire it up and test for leaks b/c it is winterized with antifreeze right now. Might have to wait until its boating time in order to re-check everything.

Take a look at the old one, was in bad shape.

Yea good thing you changed it. You should have received a white foam type gasket and an o-ring in the box with the impeller. The o-ring is not used on you pump. But the white gasket is used. I would try to sand the plate down a little on a flat surface if it is gouged real bad and smooth it out.

Looks like you might have some bits of the old impeller missing, you'll want to try to recover as many of those bits as possible to keep the flow going, you don't want any blockages.

I realize I might be a jerk for saying this, but having been stranded on the water this summer due to exactly an impeller issue like that, I hope that your boat was checked over very well for overheating.

I was able to find one big chunk in the housing area, but I guess from everyone's comments I should backflush the hoses to try and find other little parts. I read in the "How to..." thread, that one guy suggested pulling the hose from the top of the engine and running water through it to backflush. Guess I will need to find that hose, then pull the new impeller out b/c I guess the pieces will come out from there. Hope I don't damage the new one when trying to pull it out - as I do not have a puller.

I had the boat inspected by a marina/mechanic before purchasing, and it checked out well. Is there anything they can do to specifically check for overheating? I would hope that they performed a test for overheating issues if there is such a test.

When checking the impeller can you pull the plate and if the impeller looks fine replace the plate or do you need a new gasket? Or if you go that far should you just replace the impeller regardless of the condition?

I just bought my 04 22v about a month ago, and changing the impeller was at the top of my maintenance list. It is too easy to neglect. Hopefully someone will chime in with more experience, but I have close friends that change their's every year - just to be safe. Every year is probably overkill, but every other year is probably a safe bet. If you are in there checking it, you might as well change it.

One of the ways I learned to check for overheating was to look at the exhaust hoses coming off the manifold. It was surmised they would start to breakdown earlier in an overheat situation.

In my case, I didn't actually overheat my boat, but would run it a few minutes at a time, let it cool, run it again to limp home.

If a mech checked the boat, you are fine imho.

If you are giong that far you might as well replace the impeller. $32.00 is a small amount of change versus the cost of time and possibly money to get the boat off the lake if it goes out on you while out on the lake. If you are on a big lake like powell or mead and no other TO members are around it might really cost you to get it off the lake

and put the cover plate on some 400 grit wet or dry and wet sand it to smooth it out a little on a flat surface. It wont hurt it. You don't have to get all the wear marks out just smooth them out a little. Unless you want to get all the wear marks out. It will take you some time sanding is all.
