Sorry for the delay -- was in Tahoe/Reno for a week.

Through last season, we boated on the Mississippi River, Alton Pool, out of My River Home near Portage Des Sioux. This coming season we are going to boat on Rend Lake, IL, about 45 mins from StL.

Be careful on Rend, I hear it is really shallow.

Heard mixed reviews on Rend. We need a lake within one hour that has nice camping facilities. Transitioning to a ~32 foot camper for the weekends. Checked out several lakes that were either too far or no decent campgrounds close to marina or ramp.

We plan on exploring the lake and depth early spring and moving if necessary. While the Mississippi was nice in alot of ways, the flooding made things too unpredictable and limited days on the water.

The depth isn' the biggest problem. The problem is its wide open, so nut much cover from the wind. There is really only few long coves. One end of the lake has a lot of stumps as well. When we were there it was mostly people in their I/Os just cruising around.

Look into lake Kinkaid its about 30 miles south of Rend lake, Very long lots of good spots to ride as well as deep for a lake in Southern IL. It is usually around 50 foot deep. Hope this helps
