2006 24V towing with Range Rover

Was thinking of picking up an 05 Range Rover HSE (7700 towing capacity) and was wondering if anyone here tows there tige 24v or similar with it. And if so how does it handle.

even if you don't have a RR does anyone see a problem with this?

    Thanks

I have a 4runner (7,000lb towing capacity) and I pull my RZ2 with it. I had it on the scales and this is how the numbers break down:

    Dry weight of RZ2 - 4150
    trailer weight - 1200
Actual weight on scales w/half tank of gas in boat but no wakeboards, no anchor, everything removed except stereo and 2 batteries - 5800lbs.

My 4runner has a solid rear axle and is built on a truck frame and I towed my boat from TX to WA with it and it did fine. After weighing the boat my new rule of thumb about the dry weight of the boat from the manufacturer is add 500 lbs to the dry weight, then add up your gear, coolers, boards, life vests, and see if you are under the max capacity of the vehicle. Then look at tire pressure, Toyota says 32 psi but to get the max load from the tires it's 44psi. Same for the trailer, max is 50psi cold and when you add up all the weight, you are probably very close to the max weight rating of the tires so you need max air pressure.

So do some math with the weights of the boat and trailer (remember gas adds about 300 lbs for a full tank) and see if you are still in the load range of the range rover. Other things to consider, is it unibody or on a frame? What kind of axles? Try to get some reviews from a range rover forum too. They also have a bad reliability reputation and are expensive to get hard to find parts if it's used. My buddy has a 2003 and it's always breaking down for this or that but when it's running he loves it and wouldn't trade it for anything except a newer RR. I guess it's kinda like a boat that way

        3 things often overlooked.

        Tongue weight

How length of a heavy trailer effects stability

Gross combined weight, which will include any people and gear you put in the tow vehicle.

Don't ask me, I used to tow a 500gal. water tank with a Suzuki Samurai. Top speed pulling the tank was 38mph.

Very true, the combined gross weight should not be exceeded. However, I estimated that I exceeded the max tow rating of my 4runner by 1500lbs because i moved some of my uncles stuff from TX to LA. Driving across the relatively flat desert in the winter time the 4runner had no trouble at all. Of course when i got up here i had all the transmission and differential fluids flushed. If your looking for a nice luxury hauler I would consider the Toyota land cruiser (v8 w/8200#towing) or the Lexus GX (a fancy 4Runner) or the LX (a more fancy Land Cruiser).

I also forgot to mention you might need to buy a more heavy duty ball mount and make sure the hitch ball is rated for the weight of the trailer. I had to get a ball mount with a 3" rise to keep the trailer level, the factory ball mount was too low to keep the trailer level.

You might also need to add an aftermarket airbag system for the rear end. It will probably sag a bit with the independent rear suspension. I put timbren "helper" springs on my 4runner and it helped level out the 4runner. I went with timbren over airbags because eventually airbags will leak, but these heavy duty rubber helper springs will not leak and will last for many years. They were easy to install too, I just removed the factory bump stops and bolted these in place.

Basically, I love my 4runner for a tow vehicle, it's the little engine that could, stronger than it looks but still small enough to be a nice daily driver. I hope your future tow vehicle treats you as good too, and I hope you report back about the towing ability of the RR, on paper it looks like another little engine that could.

              Tow vehicle

              Your location is not listed.

You will be fine if you don't tow like a maniac and are at normal elevations.

If you live out west like I do and climb hills and deal with density altitudes approaching 7,000 feet, might want to invest in a turbo diesel.

I pull my boat with a Dodge Cummins and lock the cruise in at 78 mph towing up the grade from Baker to Vegas...I leave 4 runners etc in the dust...

It all depends on your situation what will work for you.
