Hydrofoiling in December

A buddy of mine decided to make the leap and buy an Air Chair a couple weeks ago. We have thought for some time that we needed some diversion in our lake trips, especially for days when the water is a little rough, or too many noobs show up to the lake and drive circles.

We have been out twice and it has been awesome. Previously, I had ridden a Skyski that was set up at a more advanced level. It was a struggle to keep the right balance. I would go from faceplanting to shooting out of the water with such small movements that I never felt safe on the thing. We have this foil set up with a beginner setup so that its responsiveness is much less, and that has been an awesome way to learn.

The water was awesome. Just thought I would share a few pics and get a little foiling discussion going on here.

Getting the ski on before your hands go numb can be a challenge. The retarded foot straps are painful and difficult to get on. New footstays are on the way.




Once you get off the ski itself and on the foil, everything goes quiet and smooth. It is an awesome feeling.

You can always tell that is me because my drysuit isn't long enough to cover the last 1/3rd of my lower legs...haha.

I tried hydrofoiling last summer, loved every second.

I even managed a 3/4 backflip...the other 1/4 is another story.

Have you tried getting on the ski while it is resting on the swim platform? It is alot easier to get into the ski. Only downfall, it might scratch the swim platform a bit.

I would also upgrade the seat belt, once you start trying to get air. The old dive buckle style will come open sometimes in mid air and is also very uncomfortable.

You definately have to put it in a rack. It's a pure PITA otherwise.

There is a special rack for it. We have big boats and this time of year we have few passengers. There is a padded cover for the foil that helps from banging your toes on it as it is laying on the floor. It also comes apart fairly easily which would help for storage if needed.

If someone is looking at buying one, what are the things to look for? Are there beginner to advanced chairs? Are there low end and high end chairs? We love watching them but have never been on one. Any suggestions on what to look for in one and what to watch out for?

There are definitley alot of different combinations to look at ranging from $700 for a used AC to 5k+ for a custom ski.

Air Chair has lost major market share to Skyski over the years. Skyski is a superior product IMO. Check out this forum for used skis.
