South Florida declares State of Emergency - for cold weather!

Broward County officials declared a state of emergency because of the cold weather early Monday afternoon.... In Fort Lauderdale, a low temperature record of 42 degrees for Dec. 7 that had been in place for 169 years was broken, said Dan Gregoria, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.
I especially loved this tidbit of newsworthy information:

    Schools remained open Tuesday...
They should see what it takes for our local school officials to even consider closing schools around here.

    Seriously though - I know Florida's agriculture industry can suffer mightily if they get a cold snap, so hopefully this all works out OK. I just got a kick out of the breathless level of horror in the news reporting for temperatures that some folks consider downright balmy. Heck, we're looking FORWARD to temps getting back up into the 40's. {grin}

Meanwhile, I'm taking out the trash in a t-shirt, light sweatpants, and bare feet. I kid you not. It's all in what you're accustomed to.

I just loved that comment about how schools would remain open. Seriously, what are 40F temperatures going to do to the roads to make it too dangerous to go to school?!?

Meanwhile, my truck came with a 110VAC line cord that sticks through the front grille. It connects to a block heater that warms up the oil, water, etc. to minimize wear and tear on the engine when starting in "cold" temperatures.

You'll love this part: I don't even bother plugging it in unless the ambient temp drops to 0F!

you guys crack me up...here is a picture I posted up last year...-40 is -40 no matter what side of the border you are at! We haven't hit it yet but we will. Usually for about a week in January. Not fun...

Block heaters are standard equipment here!IMG00150.jpg

My truck won't even read the temp when its colder than 40 below!

Agreed! We have a week or two of subzero double digits most years. Really kills off the mosquitoes.

Block heaters are standard equipment here, too. Mine wasn't an option, it just came that way.

Hmmm... -40 is where the curves for F and C intersect. I presume you can flip between F and C with a pushbutton, which means the electronics have to do the conversion. If the math routines are poorly written, they might be running into something they can't handle below that value and giving you the "E" to indicate it. (Sort of like how a calculator complains when you ask it to divide by zero.)

I can only imagine the Canada Tige owners are laughing. I used to live in GA and remember everyone freaking when there was frost on the ground, quite a change moving to CO. I've towed the boat through vail pass through snow/fog in late June!

In Houston, if there is a remote chance for snow, that is all we hear about for a week. Then we get a flurry and will be done for the season.
If its not fun, Why do it?

The reason they look at closing the schools in some areas is some of them are held in portable classrooms that dont have heat!
I know I will not send my kid to a classroom without heat. I mean it gets below about 35deg. and people could die or something!LOL well foridians anyway..well 35 without a heater is insane. Can you imagine trying to sit in a classroom thats 40something degrees for 5-6 hours.
