    Drive by wire

Can someone tell me if its better? and what exactly it does? I believe it started in 2006 is that right?

It did start on the 06 model year on the MPI (multi-port Injection) Marine Power engines.

It's the same basic principal that has been on cars and trucks for about 10yrs or so. There is a DC motor on the throttle body that controls the throttle plate movement based on sensor input from a group of throttle position sensors on the throttle lever assembly.

The basic principal is sound, and it has a few advantages over a cable driven throttle, but it has proven to be somewhat problematic in the boats, v's the similar setup in cars and trucks. Just an FYI, other boat brands with other engine brands have also had their own issues, one even had a recall, so it's not unique to Tige/MP.

The only down side is, it is not as quick to react to throttle command as cable, early design had comunication problems and Indmar recalled for their electronic shift but not dbw.
It is more precise for fuel economy.
