    Broken Tibia

So wakeboarding season ended a little early for us. At least it was towards the end of the season. I still don't know exactly how I managed to break my tibia this bad. It happened on August 28 about 11 am right when we got out. I was the first boarder to go and was just getting warmed up, nothing crazy (21mph, 6' air, wake to wake). I did a tail grab and when I landed my back leg was straight, I guess I hyper extended it or something. Anyway I landed the jump haerd a pop and immediately went down. I knew right away I messed something up pretty bad. I thought it was my ACL along with other ligaments and/or tendods. Xrays revealed a broken tibia, but the surgeon said everything else looked good. Yeah so a plate and 7 screws later I am on my way to recovery, I guess no snowboarding this year
    Attached are a couple pics.

My son broke his tib fib last year at this same time. Sorry to see you"re down and out for awhile. Just hang n there with the Physical Therapy when it's healed. It makes a big difference down the road.

thanks everyone! Yeah I'm on the road to a strong recovery to make sure everything heals well. I'll probably be surfing a lot more than wakeboarding next seeason though.

Sorry to hear that, bro. Just make sure you take it easy and absolutely do all the PT recommended. It makes a world of difference. See you on the lake next season surfing with the rest of us beat-up ex-wakeboarders.

Best of wishes on a speedy recovery. I had an exposed compound Tibia/Fibula a few years back (motocross), my doctor had me in a soft cast before I knew it. All he kept telling me was how lucky I was that my ankle and knee still looked good.

                    Best of wishes!

So, are those plates able to go through airport security without setting it off? I never really considered it but that would really suck to always get pulled aside going through security.

Sorry to hear about the break...

I had a rod put down the center of my Tibia...hasn't set off the airport security yet.

None of my hardware is. I have to get searched everytime. Some people say they get a note from their doctor. I never did. I just have to explain to TSA and they wand me. I don't travel much anymore, thank goodness!

Doc says it shouldn't set off any alarms which I don't understand since it's a steel plate. We'll find out in December on our way to Colorado. He did give me a card to keep in my wallet saying I have a metal plate.

That looks like a tibia plateau fracture? If so, wow, that is a tough break. My wife had one from a snowboarder that ran into her from uphill.

Tear your meniscus? If not, future is much brighter for you.

If it is a tibia plateau fracture, it does not take a lot of force for the injury--just a bag side impact angle.

Good luck in your recovery. PT is your best friend!
