    Question about CAT motor

So anyone out there have a new PCM CAT motor? So the day we were out on the "break in" day with James and Chase, that was my real first time on the boat. Bre Horton was taking stills for us. It was funny, because I was doing ballast duty in the corner, and she had to lay on the deck, so we were in quite close proximity. Basically, her rear was almost in my face. If you look at this video, you will see what I mean.

So we are going, and then the rider falls, and we slow down. Oh, geez, Bre. I didn't say anything, but Bre is a pretty, bubbly, well kept young lady, and I was kinda surprised. Hey, I thought, sometimes those things get past the best of us, right? No big deal, I moved on. So we are riding again, rider falls, slow down, BRE! Darn, girl. What did you eat? I still didn't say anything. And the worst thing, it smelt EXACTLY like the air bombs my 200 lb mastiff will lay on you. He is a great dog, but its a known issue with Mastiffs. They snore and fart. I wonder if Bre snores?

But I digress. This went on for a while, to the point I was about to donate some money to Dennis (her father) to help deal with the problem. Then she moved and went up front or something, and I smelled it again. It was the exhaust! Sometimes the exhaust from the new CAT engine, or maybe just mine, smells exactly like someone is passing some bad gas. I started laughing, told Bre, and she said, "Thank God, why do you think I had to take a break up front!? I thought it was you?" I guess it wasn't as much of a shock or a leap for her to think that fat mexican was breakin wind repeatedly.

It was pretty funny, our boat is up to about 75 hours and it still does it. Its not that bad, and I really only smell it at the back of the boat. So I am not whining. You know, we love our equipment, and our boat is one of those things we almost assign a personality to, but its a bit strange when the boat starts farting.

Anyone else have that new CAT motor and get those whiffs of delight on occasion? ;-)

LOL, that was a great laugh... At work, busy as "H E double hockey sticks" and stepped away.

Now it does seem that a "Fresh Air Exhaust" might help you out

I've got a new EX-343 CAT coming in the next couple of weeks, and I sure hope it doesn't have this problem. My current boat is a 2-stroke and I've really been looking forward to a reduction in "engine exhaust byproducts". Indeed, it was my understanding that the CAT **reduced** the engine smell along with the nasty enviro-substances. Not true???

I want to know if any others with CAT motor owners have smelt this. I feel funny going to the dealer, and telling them my boat farts. ;-)

First, the funny thing, you almost never smell "exhaust" as you smelled before with other boats. It is EXCEPTIONALLY clean. If I rode all day at the back of the boat, I could get a bit nauseous from the CO. That is NOT an issue, and NO FAE. But there is this occasional fart. It isn't quite a "clear the room" odor, but it DEFINITELY smells like a fart, and not exhaust, which is what through us for a loop.

So either my boat has an issue, or other PCM CATs do this, I just have no idea. I may post on WW, see if others have seen this.

When first running brand new PCM powered boats I noticed an odor that I first thought was a burning electrical type smell. This was a few years ago before Tige had PCMs. I think that it is the engine getting hot and reacting with the paint PCM uses. It should get better as the engine is heated up often but I would think that by 75 hours it would "burn in". On brand new engines it can be strong enough to smell from the drivers seat where if you think about it there is room for air (and odor) to travel down the gunnel right through to the rear storage area and engine bay.

That's my $.02 (in Canadian dollars)

That's my hope, just something that will burn off. Maybe its more a "time" issue than hours. Since we have had the boat for less than 60 days, more like 45.

The second question I have is, what the he!! kinda electronics you using up in Canada? ;-)

I kid you not, it is the EXACT, only less powerful odor that my mastiff makes when he sleeps at night. It is pretty darn funny. Also, it is NOT constant. It seems to only be noticeable when you let off when a rider falls, and not everytime.

                  That story is hilarious!

That sulfur smell is usually attributed to a rich condition with a catalytic converter. I'm not sure what system PCM uses to determine the mixture, it could be mass airflow, speed density, ? Do they have an 800 # that you could call and just check on this condition? You might have a bad MAP sensor which could throw off the computer and tell it that you are at a lower elevation than what you are and it thinks it needs more fuel OR it could be nothing at all and just one of the "benefits" of the PCM CAT engine.

                    Do you know where your puppy is when this happens? He's not on the boat, right? {grin}

Yeah, that is probably a good idea to call the 800 #, I will see if I can locate that. It runs great, so if it is an issue, it must be minor.

I hope you get better response from PCM than I have. I called them with the serial number of my soon-to-be-here engine, wanting to order (read: pay money for) the service manual. They had me leave a voicemail with all the details, and no one ever called me back. EVER. It's been over two weeks. I'm going to call again and hope for better results.

Bummer. I know Grant at CMS is a PCM guy, maybe he can answer. They are open tomorrow.
