Tow point on transom?

Again, I emphasize...No one has ever posted a picture of a pylon failure on this site. I think we would see it often if it were a recurring problem. I would not bother to modify the boat. Almost any mod is going to cost as much as reglassing the original pylon...and in the end, it is still going to be supported by fiberglass.

That is what I am wishing they would go back to! Then this discussion would not be happening. My 2002 had that and it is almost indestructible.

That would make a great aftermarket upgrade if someone could take their old one and have a fab shop make something similar to fit our newer v-drives. I would pay a few hundred bucks for that.

Ok, I put an email in to Harvey at Tige and first asked about the pylon. I got a one liner saying it was rated up to 300lbs. I asked specifically about tubing from this point and that is all he replied with, seriously. So I emailed again asked to get some help on this issue and sent the paragraph I posted earlier in this thread asking what that meant. I got this back:

So this is what I figure, if this is intended to lift the boat, which in my case ways about 4000lbs, most of the weight is in the back of the boat therefore I figure about 2500lbs are on both Transom Lifting Eyes, split that in two and get 1250lbs per eye. There is no way these eyes aren't strong enough to pull tubes all day long. Seems to me use the above mentioned item from Overton's and you golden.

I'm I missing something here? Per Tige, these eyes are meant for towing tubers. They are the strongest point on the boat. Forget about pulling from the pylon, pull from the eyes.

For tubes I use the tow hook that is located just above the "Tige".

Agreed, but many Tiges I've been looking at don't have such a tow point. Some have the handle, but most don't have the attachment point. Hence this thread.

We have been pulling a 4 person Great Big Mable from the pylon of our '07 Ve for last 3 summers It does strain a bit and like TallTigeguy I have spidercracks in the gelcoat at the bottom of the pylon from where it flexes. It is not tied into the steel girder as posted by Moki, I wish it were. I have tried pulling from the transom hooks, but the rope is in the water all the time. I would like to buy an aftermarket hook/tow eye, but not sure how it will mount on the curved transom of the 07 ve's instead of the relatively straight transom of the 22i pictured.

Over winter I'm thinking of having a reinforcement glassed in for piece of mind.

There is an inflatable ball that connects to the tube rope that I have seen on overtons. It is supposed to lift the tube tow rope up out of the water if you are using low tie down tow points. I'm not sure if it works but I saw it in the catalog.

I had the same problem when I was retrofitting a tower onto my current boat, which didn't come with a tower. What I did was cut 5x8 inch panels of marine plywood, apply several coats of epoxy to seal them, and then adhere them behind the tower mount points using a fiber-reinforced two part epoxy originally designed for auto/boat body repair. That stuff is STRONG, and by putting a good blob of it on the panels and smearing it around while settling it into place I ended up with four mount points that are absolutely solid even on the curved surface of the fiberglass. Then I mounted the tower to those. This distributed the stress across 40 square inches of surface area for each tower leg.

I'm thinking I'll do that to install a dedicated, centered tow point for inflatables. My only question is if I can reach the inside surface of the transom to mount it.

The transom of the RZ2 is rounded and you are going to have to put it just above the swim platform in order to have a flat surface.

I never tried the ball on the rope thing to keep the rope from dragging in the water, but having the rope drag in the water is way unacceptable. If I thought the ski pylon were completely unacceptable for towing a tube, I would not consider a Tige for my next boat. As of right now, I just find it a small annoyance.
