Took the boat to the lake this weekend, and put it in the water. No biggie. went out for a little warmup run around the bay 5-10 mins max. Got back to the dock and the bilge pump was running. I opened the engine cover to find the bilge was full!! I let it pump out, and checked the through-hulls, all water tight, no leaks. Let it sit overnight, no significant water. Took it out again, and after a little while of running, the bilge was full again. Confused.
Fast forward to this afternoon. I took things apart, and found:
1. it looks like the plastic casing for the packing was off center, to the point where the shaft was rubbing on the edge.
2. (see # 1 in pic) it looks like the plastic got hot inside the shaft cover.
3. when I unscrewed (arrow #2 in pic) the inside of that was cracked.
So, I have two questions:
First, can this happen because the packing gets worn or messed up?
Second, how the heck do I get the flange off the end in order to replace the plastic casing???
I'm supposed to go up north again this weekend and gotta have this fixed by Thurs. HELP PLEASE!!
