    serious packing leak? HELP!!

Took the boat to the lake this weekend, and put it in the water. No biggie. went out for a little warmup run around the bay 5-10 mins max. Got back to the dock and the bilge pump was running. I opened the engine cover to find the bilge was full!! I let it pump out, and checked the through-hulls, all water tight, no leaks. Let it sit overnight, no significant water. Took it out again, and after a little while of running, the bilge was full again. Confused.

Fast forward to this afternoon. I took things apart, and found:
    1. it looks like the plastic casing for the packing was off center, to the point where the shaft was rubbing on the edge.
    2. (see # 1 in pic) it looks like the plastic got hot inside the shaft cover.
    3. when I unscrewed (arrow #2 in pic) the inside of that was cracked.

    So, I have two questions:
First, can this happen because the packing gets worn or messed up?
Second, how the heck do I get the flange off the end in order to replace the plastic casing???

I'm supposed to go up north again this weekend and gotta have this fixed by Thurs. HELP PLEASE!!

I can't say I've seen that type of packing, is it a dripless setup?

The packing should leak some, that's what lubricates it and keeps it from overheating.

The luck is gone, the brain is shot, but the liquor we still got.

Mine is still hanging in there. It leaks a liitle more than it should. I will probably replace it with one of these before next season.

I think there is a thread that Zad did this? I'll see if I can find it and I might have a picture of mine?

Thats what it looks like when you loosen the hose clamps and pull it out

I did find Zad's thread, but its just about replaceing the packing. Thats pretty easy, I need to replace the whole thing, and can't get the flange off the end of the shaft.

OK, now I know what I'm looking at. It looks like you already pulled the whole thing out of the hose already. My packing nut is brass. So the nylon piece that screws into the "fixed" piece is cracked? If so this looks like the parts you may need...

Well, I just ordered the PSS seal from Skidim, $200. It'll be here tomorrow, so I will hopefully have it all taken care of by Tuesday night. Float the boat on Wednesday to make sure it works properly, and should be ready for the weekend.

TeamAllen - I'll let you know how it goes, and maybe even take some pics if I remember

Well, thanks to UPS, my new PSS seal appeared on my doorstep this morning. I got the flange off last night, so install should go pretty quick. Maybe I can even do it over lunch

yeah, I had em overnight it to make sure I could get it swapped out in time for the weekend. I just got done with the install, went really slick and easy. I'll post pics later tonight. Now I'm headed to the lake for a test run.

                              The old leaky stuffing box

                              Stuffing box removed

                              Cracked stuffing box

                              Sanding the drive shaft

The new baffle and carbon in place

Compressed with the stainless piece locked in place

Tapping into the starboard side water supply

Connecting the water line to the seal for cooling

Here's what it looks like when we're all done.

Took in out on the lake tonight, no leaks. Perfect!!
