    Checking transmission fluid

I seem to remember a thread on how to check transmission fluid but cant find it.

We were out last weekend and when I backed out of the throttle, the alarm sounded and boat died. It restarted, but as soon as I engaged the drive, it died again. This happened one more time before it finally started and went into drive OK so I could pick up my kid in the water. The temp gauge was just under 175 as normal although oil pressure still reads 0 and I have to figure out why that one is not working!!! Anyway...

We went for a bit more and the same thing happened.

I opened the trans dipstick and there was no oil on the dipstick. I am wondering if this might be the problem.

So, to check the trans fluid, can that be done on the water (mind you the river is basically glass)? Does the trans have to be in gear - should it not be in gear, etc?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh boy oh boy oh boy is dad gona be pissed at you when he finds out about this!…… yes you should check more often.. Lots!….. Should be hot 20 min run time……. I take stick out, clean, hold almost in place let someone start, run, stop, and then a quick in and out and see what’s there….. Just a bit tops it off… too much is bad to…. And it’s not “it’s on the stick so I’m good. “It’s at the right spot so I’m good” good luck! (I did the same thing! the same way!)

I just had this problem. Checked fluid while boat was on the trailer not running, looked great. When I put it on the water the trans was slipping. Checked it on the water with engine running and the dipstick just barely touched fluid level. Had to add about 2/3 of a quart up to the full line checking constantly and it runs great now.

does your oil gauge always read 0? Cause its a pretty simple fix, probably the sending unit. Takes like 20-30 minutes.

check the fluid. standard atf should be good. couldnt hurt to get some royal purple full synthetic tho
I think thats right lol. correct me if im wrong guys. Im having a brain fart.

Ok, I started to post this afternoon but decided to wait until I could look at my manual. The manual says to fill the velvet drive w/ 1 1/2 qts of Dexron III Trans fluid for my year/model boat.

In my notes I have to fill 1/4" above the full line while on the trailer. For the life of me I can't remember why or who told me this. So far it works, when it is in the water and been running it is right on the full mark. Because if this is so, and you fill to the full mark on the trailer you should be low in the water. Has anyone else heard of this?

Also w/ the oil, I had the same problem last year but I put some sea foam in my oil last year. Once I changed the oil and went w/ just what my manual says, I haven't had an issue. I decide to go w/ what my manual says and some of the info I receive from Chptril. He has been dead on the money w/ everything for my boat. The only thing I add anything to is my gas for the ethonal.

it makes sense. should work as long as everyone has there trailer running at the right height (correct drop hitches and stuff)
