    Another Steering thread

So I changed my steering cable this past week. Not sure what I did wrong but it was simple and only took me 20 minutes tops after I pulled all the panels out.

I was sent a 21 foot cable which I felt was way to long as I had tons of extra cable left over.

The steering effort is much less then before, however it is still tougher to turn left then right. Now someone will pipe up and say cause I am steering against the wash from the prop, well it is tougher when it is sitting out of the water, so that is not the issue. The steering also has lots of play and is kinda chunky on the left hand turn as it is easy hard easy hard. It still requires two hands to turn left but a mere finger to turn right.

My thinking is that I need to replace something in the helm to take the play out, but not sure where the tight chunky steering is coming from. The rudder is greased as always. Not sure if the rudder needs replacement either? Any ideas where to start. Just dont want to start buying things I do not need.

Sounds like an issue with your rudder. Check that out to see if it is binding on your left turn. Your steering cable is probably too long considering I had a ton of extra cable and mine was only 17'. I would check to make sure that your "extra" cable hasn't gotten itself caught around anything, or into a position where it is making very tight turns.

On my boat, a left turn is when the cable retracts and right turn is when the cable extends, so maybe if your cable has a serious bend in it you could be binding in one direction only but I would trouble shoot the rudder mount.

Also marine grease the heck out of the entire thing. That can never hurt!

Are steering cables prone to failure? Is the failure mainly due to corrosion from the bilge?

Yes, water in the bilge area will ruin the cable. The new boats run the cable differently. You can also run the cable on top of the tank and on the high side of the stringers to keep it out of the water. This will make it last longer as well.

21ft is the correct length for a 24 foot boat, check your routing, make sure you have a good radious coming off from helm not to tight a turn, grab the rudder under the boat and check for side to side or back and forth play , if there is play you need new rudder and port.

Unhook your cable at the rudder arm, and move the rudder back and forth with your hands. If it is still stiff, like Dom said, you need a new rudder and rudderbox. I had the same problem and replaced mine.

Replaced mine this weekend, 22i. Took two of us a little less than 1 hour, piece of cake! This is my 3rd cable since 2005.

Don't worry, I said the same thing when I did mine and people called me crazy. It's all about the right tools! I think total we were done in like 25 mins. Mine went right in first time.... I know some have to fight getting the cable through. It's amazing what you can do w/ the right power tools
