    couple questions (pics for all of them)

    ok so i have a few things i have questions about. I have been installing car stereos since i was 15 and worked at a kicker dealer for a couple years. but the wiring of the audio in this boat seems to be very different. my first problem is the the JVC remote to my CD player does not work at all. i think i have found the plug thats supposed to be connected but other than that im not sure how this is supposed to work because any remote plug i have ever seen looks completely different.

    My second question is about the TAPS motor thing. i am pretty mechanical, however i have never seen one of these before and would like to know what maintenance these need and how often.

    oh and im also wondering if any of you know what this little black box is that says 12v on it?

    In RE to the stereo and remote, that white connector does resemble the older JVC remote plugs off the back of the head-unit. Is that near the head-unit or remote?

    Actually, the only difference between installing a boat stereo and a car stereo is that in a boat, you dont have a chassis to ground to, so everything needs to back to the battery. Although, some boats do have ground BUSS bars, but I dont recommend using them for the stereo, as this may let noise in.

      As far as the TAPS system (1st picture): Just make sure it has ample fluid, (ATF works). There is a window "full" indicator on the side but you may have to get a mirror down there to see it. Fluid is added where there is a littel rubber plug that can be removed.

      Otherwise just confirm that the TAPS plate moves up and down when the button on the throttle is pushed up or down, it only moves about 2-3 inches full travel.

      you can test it by running positive and negative leads off your battery and connecting them to the appropriate wires off the pump.

      If you do a search under "TAPS" you will find addtional information.

        yes its sitting right behind the head unit, but I dont see the receiving end of it on the unit. also for clarification the head unit is a JVC that looks to be the original. if this isnt the original i would say ill have to buy a new unit with a remote plug, and splice it in there in place of this old plug right?

            If remember right, the head-unit had a lead that came off the head-unit for the remote to plug in. I would cut open that taped harness and see if that plug is wired to the head-unit or is it coming from the remote.

            Good luck, According to Prospec, the peeps who actually sell the JVC marine line, all their new head-units will work with the older remotes.....NOT! So if you buy a new JVC head-unit, be prepared to get a new remote.

              well my worst fears are true. that plug is coming from the remote so the only option is to buy both a new head unit and a new remote...aside from that though thank you chptril for your insight on the matter. do you know of anywhere i can get some good deals on audio equipment. i was debating on upgrading everything anyway.

                Contact Prospec and see if they can confirm yes/no if there is a current JBL head-unit that will work with your original remote. Shoot me a PM with what they tell you.
