Help settle a bet regarding steering cable

Changed out the steering cable last week and it feels like I just bought a new boat. Thanks for all the help.
A buddy of mine helped me change out the steering cable, and after we pulled the old one out, he cleaned it up and it began to move in and out of the sleeve a lot easier. He wanted to bet me a $100 that I really didn't need to replace the cable, just pull it out and clean/ lube it and it would be as good as new. I told him he was full of $@*! and that I thought there was probably more corrosion inside the cable itself. It can't just be cleaned; it has to be replaced.
Who is right? IS there a way to just clean it up and NOT replace?

You are right. That cable is shot. It may have worked better but still not like a new one.

IMO, you're both right. You could prlly clean it and lube it and get it working ok. I HIGHLY doubt it will stay too good for too long though. Once the corrosion starts it snowballs pretty quick from my experience.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

When I did my cable I cut it open and mine had so much rust and crap inside of the sleeve it was unreal no way a clean and lube would have fixed mine.

My vote also. You could clean it, but it would get bad again soon. It does not surprise me that you now feel like it does not bind anymore.
          Be excellent to one another.

Yup. The downhill slide is steep and fast. You outta see how my trailer is being eaten alive from the inside with rust. I clean out the chips and rustoleum as much as I can, but it will fail - quickly.

I have a 2006 22Ve and I noticed that when I turned to the left it was very difficult... but when I turned to the right (drivers side) that it was easy... should I be looking at changing my steering cable? thanks, Dave

How much did you pay for that steering cable? And where did you get it? At the dealer?

I had the same problem. For me, it was the rudder shaft and rudder box where the bind was taking place. However, I am guessing that it is your cable.

Disconnect your rudder arm from the cable and turn your rudder by hand. Also wiggle it back and forth and see how much play you have. My rudder turned easy by hand, but I had a lot of play between the rudder shaft and rudder box. Under power, the prop wash would push against it and it would bind when turning to the left.

Make sure that you are lubing your rudder box as well.

Mine was having a similar problem. I ordered it through SPBFAN and it works awesome. I ordered on a Wednesday and I had it at my house by that next Monday. Takes a few hours the first time (for me) to install but it would go much smoother if you had someone with experience helping you. Steering cable is most likely the problem it sounds like to me.

Ditto. Ordered/received my Teleflex cable from SPBFAN last winter/spring. Lucky for me, I was also having a ballast system installed so my guy did it at the same time. From all posts I've read, it sounds doable--just much easier faster the 2nd time you do it. Love to assist* someone who is doing one before I attempt on my own.

Steers with 1 finger like previous post(er) said.
