    Accident wakeboarding this weekend

My brother learned how to wakeboard last weekend. Got him up after a few pulls and taught him how to use his toes and heels to turns back and forth. He takes it upon himself to try a jump with out instruction. He launches fine but comes down nose first, the board grabbed and he did a face plant. He signals he is ok and he pick him up. Next boarder is out doing a run and my brother makes his way to the front of the boat. His wife gets my attention and tells me my brother does not know where he is or how he got on the boat. I knew he had a concussion. We head to shore and take im to hospital, on the way there he gains some memory back but still does not remember all of the incidnet. Had a CAT scan and no problems. Little scarey for all on the boat.

Anyone else heard of this? He must have hit pretty hard.

Yup. You'd be surprised how common it is. You really don't need to hit that incredibly hard if the right circumsances are met. Water is hard. lol
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

If I had a dollar for every rider that tried to jump without instruction behind my boat...

                  +1...

I think the helmet has saved me a couple of time. I have ear pieces on my helmet so I think this helps. I will be 48 soon and just learning how to jump the wake (still no luck yet but working on it).

many threads here on helmets trading decreasing concussion risk at the cost of increasing neck injury risk.

Personally, I would rather strain my neck than scramble my brain.

I took a very minor face plant off the starting ramp my right eye and cheek bone hit the water perfect ended up with a black eye for 3 weeks and my nose lip and cheek numb for 5 weeks and on 6th week the lip still feels funny. So this does not shock me at all. I was slightly concussed and had headaches for almost 2 weeks. I was not doing anything remotely crazy. Just perfect smack is all it took. ER Doc friend of mine thinks if I had a CT done I would have some minor fracture.

I disagree. Guys theorize about it, but it never seems to be true. But these threads always start an argument...haha. I do not see threads stating first hand experience that they hurt their neck more when wearing a helmet. But I know lots of guys who felt it protected them from a concussion. For the record, I wear a helmet and have no concerns at all about additional risk to my neck.

helmets can be dangerous on the water. I was wearing a helmet when we were test driving our 21v and I did a back roll on my knee board dipped the nose off the bounce. caught the nose on the water, smacked my head on the water sideways, blew out my ear drum, and was completely unaware of where i was I couldnt hear and basically woke up in water.... scariest 2 minutes of my life for sure.
