    Help, Boat starts then dies

Was wondering if anyone out there could help me with a inconsistent problem I had on my powell trip. Typically we'd go out early morning for a session and we would have no issues. Then we'd come back for a bit and as the day heats up we'd head out again. The boat would start and then die, or start and run for a bit and when I'd idle up it would die. Or sometimes it would run and I'd be fine. I'd run the blower and lift the rear storage doors to vent it out beforehand. Figured it have to be something with the fuel delivery. Temps and Oil Pressure look normal. When the key is in you can hear the fuel pump working fine. It has never done this before this trip. Any ideas?

Do you just hear the fuel pump running or does it stop. If you just hear it running and running you are most likely vapor locked. Mine does it if I sit for a while on a hot day after riding for a while. I just pop the hatch and let it cool down in there and it is fine.

Looks like others have a similar issue: http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12485

I also talked to this local RZ2 owner, Shane, about his alternator/electrical problems that he is having. I think he had the alternator load tested and it is fine but is still having some sort of charging issue:

You're still under warranty though, aren't you? 3 years? You should still have a full year left.

It runs and then stops. Was thinking it might be vapor locking as well but its hours after riding when it happens.

Still could be. All that heat trapped in there. Try leaving the hatch open and see what happens. If the fuel pump stops though you would think it has gotten fuel.

Sounds almost exactly like an issue I had on my old Silverado truck (It had the Chevy 5.3L engine)...it ended up being the fuel pressure regulator.

Sounds like I'm having the same problem Moki was.

Still under warranty, wierd thing is that I took it in for my 200 hr service couple days before. Not sure they would be able to replicate the issue to diagnose it.

Congrats on 200 hours...I'm still trying to get there! :P

See if you can get it to do it still and if you can, take one of them out on the boat and water test it.

Sounds like Moki and AustinSouthSide were having issues with the motor cutting of while running...going from low speeds to idle.

The way I interpreted your symptom was going out in the morning, bringing the boat to the dock and having lunch. Coming back in an hour or so, then trying to start your boat. The boat either will just crank, or it catches and within a few seconds it spudders and dies almost like it was starved for fuel. After two or three attempts its fine. And these symptoms occur more so when its hot out. (This is exactly what my 2000 Chevy truck was doing).

But to me these sound like two completely different issues.

I would bet my next case of beer on the fact that its the fuel pressure regulator.

I'm sticking with vapor lock on this one.

It does sounds like vapor lock, but I'm assuming the Z1 is EFI. Vapor lock is quite rare in fuel injected motors since the entire system is pressurized.

But then again I am only wagering a case of beer

Mine is fuel injected and still does it. You can hear the fuel pump trying to get fuel. He did say though that his fuel pump stops like it is pressurized.

Not sure it"s the same issue, since your boat is so new, but some of us with older boats have had a similar issue. There are quite a few threads on it already. It only happens at Lake Powell for me. It obviously could have something to do with the fuel supply in the area. I have been using a fuel additive from Sta-Bil for marine use. I was worried it was the ethanol % in the fuel?

The best way to describe the problem i get is hot soak. It only occurs when driving fairly hard, like a ski run, then shutting it off and sit for a few minutes. The heat builds up and starts and dies. I started to notice the temp gauge would climb a few degrees after running it hard. When I came back off the throttle i would notice the gauge drop a few degrees, maybe 5? So now I let it idle till the gauge drops and then turn it off. That and the fuel stabilizer have been 99% effective.

Correct, I can hear the fuel pump kick on and stop after its pressurized.

Mine is hours after we had our early session.
