I am now officially a steering legend in my own

I am now officially a steering legend in my own mind:

It all started three years ago, when my boat was very difficult to turn to the left under power and the cable in my helm actually started slipping. The helm unit and cable are no longer made, so I repaired the helm by putting spacers around the cable housing. This solved the slipping problem and I just ignored the hard turning to the left.

I bought a new helm a few years ago and was going to pay somebody to install it and replace the cable. But I kept putting it off, because my fix was working. After reading Lee's "How to replace a cable" I decided to go for it. I followed Lee's instructions (with the exception of feeding my cable towards the helm - much easier on my boat). However, I still had the same problem. So I found a new rudder and rudder box on craiglist and installed it.

I still have a "loaded rudder" (my boat will turn to the right), but I can now easily turn to the left. I think that the rudder shaft was binding against the rudder box from the prop wash, as it was only hard to turn under power.

Now, the only thing that is original in my current steering system is the steering wheel.

Thanks to SBFAN and KONA for their help and Lee for the write up.

If anybody that has the same steering system and are interested in replacing it, I can post all of the parts, pics and steps that I took.

I bought a new cable last year, and need to install it. Do you recommend replacing everything or just the cable?

I wish I knew you were replacing yours I would come over to help and learn. Was it hard?

I am confident that it is just the cable that you need to replace. Your boat is so much newer and have rack and pinion steering. The hardest part for me was getting the 1-1/8th nut off of the back that is under the engine. I am not sure how much space you have but it was tight and took the longest to do. Let me know if you run into problems and I will come and help.

I am amazed that a three year old boat would need the cable replaced so soon! Is the cable laying in the bilge and rusting?
            Just wondering.

It is definitely time to change the cable. I think it is a bad part design. I bought a new cable that should last longer.

Kito,do you have pictures of your replacement?

Are these steering cable issues common or are they exceptions?

I am having a hard time with cable an interior issues on young Tige's 2007 and newer!

                      Are my expectations wrong?

It took me Six hours to replace my cable yesterday. The hardest part was to remove the old cable, I had to make the whole slightly bigger where the cable goes through.

Now I can steer with one finger, before I had to use both hands, using all my strength.

MoneyPit, I actually should have changed my cable last year already, the entire last season it was very hard to steer. My opinion is that Tige uses not the best available steering cable. I replaced my with a cable that is not the original, it cost a little more but it should last longer.

Nice job! The toughest part for me was the nut under the engine at the end of the cable. Congrats on getting it done!
