    A sad / funny incident

I know that there are threads out for stupid boating incidents but I didn't want to take the time to find them.

A buddy of mine calls yesterday to ask if I heard about what happened to our friend's boat? He proceeded to tell me that they were going to bring the boat to town for some speaker repair. The dad drove the truck and trailer to the landing and instructed his son to drive the boat from their house to the landing. No problems. Load boat, no problems. Pull boat out of water, no problems. Pull boat to town, problem... After a 15 minute drive into town they notice smoke bellowing out of the engine compartment. When the stopped and got out to investigate they found that they never turned the motor off!

    Seriously.

      Dooohhhh!!

I would be interested to hear the extent of the damage. My Guess:
      Destroyed Impellor-SP?
      Cracked Head

My wife did the same thing to me she drove boat on trailer. I pulled out drove around parking lot stopped to let wife out and load gear into truck. I get out of truck and start walking back and I am like what the hell is that noise.....its the boat running on the trailer...me "WTF"....wife-"you never told me to turn it off"....Me-"I dont tell you to wipe your *** every time you take a poop either so is your *** dirty right now" her-"f*** You" It took a looonnnnggggg time to get out of that dog house. No damage to the boat...good thing it wasnt even my boat.

My wife, ditto. More than once. Last trip she left nav light on top of tower on. New rule. Wipe boat and dry it only after motor check and turn perko off.

Classic. I can see it right now. You might have been in the dog house, but she is the one that dropped the f-bomb. Haha. I really liked your analogy, but what really made it great was the question that followed.

I saw a guy do this with his Malibu the other week. I was at storage, a few hundred yards up from the boat ramp wiping down, saw the boat go by on the trailer and heard this noise, what is that? Then when I realized it was the engine running I started yelling for them to turn off their engine. They probably would've figured it out in another 2 minutes anyway when they got to their garage, but I was just trying to help.

I did the same thing while loading my boat solo at a busy ramp one day, drove to the top of the marina parking lot and heard that same "funny noise", I jumped in the boat like I was a gazelle. Luckly the temps didnt even budge above normal, I replaced the impeller. I felt like a complete tool that day. I double check that its off every time I launch now.

Did the same thing this weekend. I always load and unload by my self and a boat buddy so once it clicks in I attach my wench hop out and drive my self out of the water. I got out to pull the plug out of the boat and it was still running. Man I felt dumb but it was out of water less than a minute.

When I was looking to buy my first used boat 6 years ago, went to a guy's house to see his 20' SeaRay with 4.3 Mercruiser v6. He had it only for a year and was selling because he didn't have time to use it.

When I asked if it ran well, he said sure, jumped in, fired it up, gunned the engine a few times and shut it down. No fake-a-lake/hose muffs attached.

I said I thought you had to have water to cool the engine and he said someone told him it was OK to run if you didn't engage the propeller/gear when it was on land, and not to run it more than a minute or so. He said he loved the non-muffled sound* of the engine and started it sometimes in the driveway just to make sure it ran and to listen to the engine.

                        I slowly walked away....

*BUT....when I would winterize my I/O in my driveway WITH the hose/muffs over the water intake, I did love the unmuffled sound of my 5.0 v8 echoing off my neighbor's garage door...esp when pouring the fogging oil down the carb... blub blub blub bllllllbuuiullb...bullubl blllup. BLUB..bluullb. BLUB.

With the FAE I miss that sound....but love the FAE.

Last weekend a Bu with the 8.1L roared by several times and made me really appreciate the FAE, it's like stealth mode.

One guy that I own the Tige with has done that twice. Both were caught in less than a minute and were many impeller changes ago. We make fun of him everytime he puts the boat on the trailer now.

Teach her to back the trailer, less to damage. My wife backs the trailer, but when she was learning she pissed a lot of people off (miss 20 trys).
